In the last few years, many of Oliver Husain’s projects have spawned from hearsay, rumour, or chance encounters. During the residency, Husain will research and explore the history of the hair animation industry in commercial film and photography which, as the rumour goes, used to be highly developed in Singapore until the rise of digital animation in the 2000s. Fascinated by the abstract and poetic qualities of the purposeless movement of hair freed from narrative constraints and product placement needs, the artist plans to delve into unofficial and queer forms of knowledge by conducting fieldwork in hair salons and interviewing senior hair stylists. At the same time, he will research and collect fashion editorials, photographs, films, and other extant materials of the time in preparation for an experimental hair animation to be possibly realized in collaboration with Computer-generated imagery (CGI) experts in Singapore.

During the residency, Monica Ursina Jäger will examine the shifting topography of Singapore and Southern Malaysia and how it changed over the last century by engaging with urban development, and architecture. Of particular interest is the relationship between built environments and natural landscapes in “the vertical shift” incurred in the notion of landscape. Looking at Singapore as a unique case study, her research aims to focus on and excavate histories related to the social, political and sensorial conversations between natural and built elements and to rethink ‘topography’ as a mental landscape, rather than as a form of visual representation.

Since 2014, Min Thein Sung has been collecting historical, sociological, and material data for the project Mr Tailor had a dream last night: a soft-sculpture installation made of raw linen fabrics that recreates a small tailor shop, a space for craftsmanship that is still common in Myanmar but fast-dwindling in Singapore. Addressing the alienation of the consumer from the garment-maker and the resilience of this kind of handicraft in the face of today’s industrial mass production, the artist intends to engage with local taylors and with the tools of the trade in order to create a new sculptural piece.

Valdez situates his work at the intersection of architecture and sculpture, in a liminal space where the limits of public and private, social and individual, containers and contents are constantly challenged. In line with a series of works developed over the last few years that engage different building methods, the artist will research the technique of concrete sheltering. Looking at monumental sculpture and working with local masons who specialise in concrete sheltering and other construction techniques specific to Singapore, he will experiment new possibile developments for his work.

During the residency, Lee will expand his interest in urban phenomena and inner structures by focusing on cutaways: openings created through the partial removal of the external surface of an object that makes its internal features visible. The artist will research and select a number of case studies in Singapore to explore the function of cutaways with in the urban context and engage with overlooked issues regarding art, architecture, and urban design.

Informed by several theories in the fields of film studies, linguistics, and graphic design, Lee regards cutaways as a method of investigation, a concealment device that can open up a different understanding of urban processes and anxieties as well as provide a penetrating insight into the deep-seated desires of the city.

He aims to advance his research on the history, materials, and aesthetics of Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and, also, to pursue his investigation into the accessibility of art spaces for the disabled. During the residency, Sohr will gradually transform his studio into a temporary space for the production of new sculptures and installations.

During the residency, Atienza aims to explore Singapore’s relationship with water and its geopolitical role in shaping connections and contrasts with neighboring countries. In the past four years, de Boer has been questioning her practice and the impact that critical recognition and the professionalization of her work as a practicing artist has made upon her creative process. At this self-reflective juncture, the artist is interested in the conditions for thinking and inspiration, investigating notions of open-ended time and of personal and societal rhythms. In her view, to place aimless, untroubled” time in relation to creativity, research, and production offers a political counterpoint to the outcome-driven model that rules the art world and our contemporary life, opening up a space for creation that allows for experimentation, boredom, and failure. During the residency, de Boer plans to further develop this research engaging in conversation with a variety of experts that can help her reframe the question of time.

A three-year research project conducted in conjunction with Nature Society of Singapore and National University of Singapore, Railtrack Songmaps features recordings of birds along the Tanglin Halt rail tracks, collecting the fleeting voices of nature to explore interspecies communication and the entanglements of animal life and urban development. Due to its wide-ranging interdisciplinary approach, the project unfolds through collaborations with several artists, scientists, designers, and photographers based in Singapore.
