Extractivism]]> Labour]]> hevea brasiliensis (rubber plant) seeds, brought to the region from London’s Kew Gardens in 1877. Expanding the lines of inquiry of a previous project—The Skin Labour (2016)—that examined rubber plantations in the Ecuadorian Amazon, Adrián Balseca follows the “trajectory of latex” in the Global South by investigating power relations, labour processes, and patterns of bodily movements devised for rubber harvesting in Singapore and Malaysia at a crucial moment of transition from manual to mechanical techniques. In particular, furthering his investigation of social-environmental issues and the “extractivist” dynamics that underscore capitalistic development, the artist will research designs and graphic patterns of incision employed for tapping rubber trees and the manifold implications entailed by the relocation of labour practices in different political, cultural, and environmental contexts.]]> Adrián Balseca]]> Adrián Balseca]]> Installation]]> Film]]> Southeast Asia]]> Fiction]]> Other Futures that will take place in Amsterdam 2020. Following the same train of thought, the research project for the residency is titled Being There or Life is a State of Mind, after the 1979 film by American director Hal Ashby. Losi intends to conduct a series of interviews with people from diverse disciplines, generations, and socioeconomic backgrounds asking them to describe a certain typology of place. During the residency, Camacho Herrera will re-orient his research to explore connections between Southeast Asia and South America, especially in light of past and recent instances related to the economic exploitation of tropical nature. Understanding trade, migration, and natural resource economics as main propellers of development and cross-cultural encounters, the artist ultimately seeks to generate alternative narratives that challenge spatial, temporal, and geopolitical categories institutionalised in official accounts.]]> Francisco Camacho Herrera]]> Installation]]> Performance]]> Curatorial Practice]]> iLiana Fokianaki]]> Performance]]> Europe]]> Southeast Asia]]> Urbanism]]> Topography]]> History]]> Izat Arif]]> Installation]]> Video]]> Southeast Asia]]> Artistic Research]]> John Low]]> Southeast Asia]]> Artistic Research]]> John Torres]]> Film]]> Southeast Asia]]>
