This workshop is based on the idea of “upcycling” by transforming the traditional into the “current”, and by-products of the fashion industry into new materials or better products. Lulu Lutfi Labibi will demonstrate the creation process behind his “Celana Paman” collection, launched in 2011, in which he deconstructed oversized men’s pants and made them into dresses of various styles. In this workshop, participants will be asked to bring unused or unwanted clothings and be introduced to various technique for transforming them into ready-to-wear drapes.

If the sea has long been a preoccupation of Singapore artist Charles Lim Yi Yong, so has the reclamation of land from the sea. Since Singapore’s independence in 1965, the island-city-state has grown over a quarter of its area through land reclamation on its outer lying islands and coasts. These circumstances may make Singapore unique in Southeast Asia, but in what ways does this demonstration of the technocratic state’s mastery over nature represent or misrepresent a shared aspiration of modernity in the region? In this session, Joshua Comaroff and Seth Denizen offer their perspectives on the larger implications of land reclamation.

This workshop shares the impacts of relocation; from the southern islands to mainland Singapore and the aftermath that still threatens the livelihoods and traditions of active Orang Laut/Pulau community members. It explores food through Orang Laut/Pulau values and traditions that have shaped (and still shape) a more sustainable way of life. With a visit to West Coast Park, where a small Orang Laut/Pulau community still thrives, this session questions Singapore’s progress as a young nation, asking if there is space for indigenous cultures and traditions to stay alive here. The session highlights some ways young individuals in Singapore can contribute to salvaging a lesser-known tradition. It also speaks of heritage and culture through a shared meal. Firdaus shares a tangible aspect of his family’s heritage—its cuisine that reflects a life on the island that is no longer accessible. The food is lovingly cooked by Pulau Semakau islanders who have learnt their ancestors’ original cooking methods and recipes.]]>

Samsui
women migrated from Southern China to Singapore in the early decades of the twentieth century to toil mainly as construction workers. They were easily recognised through their distinctive red headscarves, black tunic and black pants which formed the livery that they wore to work every day. In the past few decades, these women have formed the subject of a plethora of social memory texts, ranging from art, literature, and popular history books to various media outlets and community exhibitions. This talk presents the different material forms through which Samsui women have been remembered and merchandised, and addresses the politics of remembering and forgetting.

Knowledge Production]]> Pulp is part of her lifetime project, as an attempt to bridge languages/histories/cultures and civilisations in a globalised world where homogenisation and imposed ideas of conformity have led to their disappearance. While in residence, Rao will look primarily at Singapore and Southeast and South Asia, drawing connections between languages (Jawi and Sanskrit, for example), the histories of print, mass literacy and the role of archives in defining national identities especially in a post-colonial context. Through this research Rao hopes to create discourse about the way we use collate, sort, keep and discard knowledge, and the relevance of this to individual and national identities, as well as the implications for humanism and our species as a whole.]]> Shubigi Rao]]> Installation]]> Asia]]>
