19 Dec 2014, Fri 7:00pm - 10:00pm

As an expanded version of his NTU CCA Residencies project, Singapore Art Archive Project @ Centre for Contemporary Art, Koh Nguang How presents the temporary exhibition Shui Tit Sing – 100 Years of an Artist through his Archives. Following this idea of a responsive archive, Koh has chosen to profile one of the lesser known early artists from Singapore’s art history, Shui Tit Sing (1914 – 1997), who commenced his artistic training in 1935, the same year the Gillman Barracks were erected. Shui trained at the Hangzhou National Fine Art College in Western painting and developed a practice that crosses fluidly between this Western style, as seen through fauvist devices in early self portraits, through to his Chinese ink painting. He is known for his wood carving sculptures largely influenced by bas relief from temples around Southeast Asia. An avid photographer, painter and sculptor Shui remained active within exhibitions including at the National Museum Art Gallery from 1946 to early 1990s. Shui also spent the 1960s and 1970s travelling through Southeast Asia gaining influences from the various art forms encountered in Cambodia, Thailand, Borneo and Sumatra. Curated by Koh, material in this exhibition demonstrates an artist re-constructing the activities of another artist through ephemera, sketches, reproductions and original artworks, reflecting the complexities of Shui’s artistic and intellectual “vita active” as an artist, journalist and educator. Koh was granted guardianship of this unique collection by the family of Shui Tit Sing.

Nearly two decades ago, The Drawing Room began as a specialist venue revitalizing works on paper. It has since expanded to various artistic formats grounded on defined sensibilities that map the complex scope of thinking attributed to the terrain of contemporary Philippine art.
The gallery features artists whose respective practices represent the country in constant frenetic flux and depict the ensemble of realities that makes up a complex society. It values the depth of a relationship a gallery offers to the artist and propels them through a critical program of exposure and support of their interdisciplinary artistic process.
Aside from monthly exhibitions in Manila, The Drawing Room circulates its artists off-site shows in other spaces in Hong Kong, Singapore, Taipei, Jakarta, New York, and Paris. It is a regular participant of art fairs both local and international.

5 Apr 2014, Sat 4:00pm - 5:00pm

Visual Snow (2014) is an important installment in Shubigi Rao’s ongoing biographical study of S. Raoul1, which, for the first time, will examine his work in the context of the disappearing film.

1 S. Raoul acted as if the world needed obscure scholarship, freed from economic and nationalist imperatives, liberated from any agenda save that of furthering said scholarship, a form of quiet activism that has numerous historical precedents and antecedents. Biographical Text
Long-form biography for the Contributor (no character count). A short-form biography (no more than 240 characters) should be added to the Contributor's Description
The son of a filmmaker from the earlier generation of Chinese socialist realism, Chen Kaige represents the Fifth Generation, filmmakers who attended Beijing Film Institute after the Cultural Revolution. After graduating in 1982, Chen and his classmates began a new wave in Chinese cinema by emphasizing the visual and aural qualities of film rather than traditional dramatic and literary elements. Their films have also been characterized by a strong political commitment which has led to objections from censors and has limited their domestic audience to students and intellectuals. Outside China, however, Chen Kaige and the other Fifth Generation filmmakers have drawn attention from an increasingly wide circle of film sophisticates who have hailed their efforts as the next most important New Wave. Chen has been awarded top festival prizes in Tokyo, Cannes and Berlin.

He is a known for Farewell My Concubine (1993), Yellow Earth (1984) and Together with You(2002). In recent years, Chen directed the war film The Battle at Lake Changjin and its sequel with Tsui Hark and Dante Lam, with the two films characterized by propagandistic storytelling and made in cooperation with the Chinese Communist Party.
