Ngoc Nau is a media artist based in Hanoi and Thai Nguyen, Vietnam. She has been continuously investigating various fields of research to feed her art creation process, mixing observations with her life experience and imagination. Some of her main early inspirations came from philosophical ideas about the cosmology in Buddhism and the structure of light coming from physical theories. She is also interested in development of new technologies that are changing the way people see the world. Starting from a macro perspective, she gradually moves to a micro level using real stories of daily life to find ways to connect the larger system with her community.

An artist works with various media: video installations using 3D modeling software and internet open source. Saeko Ando (Japan/Vietnam) studied Japanese art and philosophy at Waseda University in Tokyo. In 1995, she moved to Vietnam to learn lacquer art under the tutelage of Trinh Tuan, Doan Chi Trung, Nguyen Huy Hoan, and Lam Huu Chinh. Her practice integrates the traditional with the contemporary through an innovative use of Vietnamese lacquer techniques. Ando’s eccentric style earned the respect of Vietnam’s art society, and she was the first foreign member to be invited to the Hanoi Art Association in 2000. She has exhibited extensively in Vietnam and internationally, and regularly presents her research on lacquer arts from Vietnam, Taiwan, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, and Japan in conventions and symposiums.

Born in 1975 in Hanoi, Giang moved to Ho Chi Minh City with her family when she was eight years old. Widely recognised as in important voice in contemporary Vietnamese art, she was twice selected, in 1997 and 1999, as “One of the Top Ten Young Artists of Ho Chi Minh City”. After graduating from Ho Chi Minh Fine Art University she spent a further four months on an art scholarship at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 2004, Giang was also a Resident Artist recipient of the CAVE Organisation in New York. Well versed in feminist theories that impact contemporary Vietnamese society, she resists infiltrating her work with the seduction of poetic embellishments as she circumvents typical romantic narratives commonly associated with Vietnamese silk painting.

Long-form biography for the Contributor (no character count). A short-form biography (no more than 240 characters) should be added to the Contributor's Description
Trần Lương is a visual artist, independent curator and a pioneer in creating space for critical contemporary art in Vietnam. Among the first local artists to experiment with performance and video, his artwork is grounded in local experience. Active in making opportunities for artists, Trần Lương co-founded the ‘Gang of Five’ (1983-1996), which organized monthly exhibitions in alternative spaces. In 1998, he co-founded Nhà Sàn Studio, the country’s first, artist-led, experimental art space, and curated the majority of its exhibitions in the initial four years. He was also the founding director of the Hanoi Contemporary Art Centre in 2000, resigning in 2003 in protest of government corruption. A generous mentor of youth, Trần Lương goes beyond presumed ideas of curating, encouraging performers to push the boundaries, negotiating with the authorities, creating exchanges between North, Centre and South Vietnam, bringing artists of the diaspora back to Vietnam, and hosting international artists. In addition, he also manages many community development projects in multiple regions in Vietnam. His art critiques repression, emphasising human resilience as an empowering of the individual through personal action and self-reflection. His dedicated energy in developing spaces, initiatives, networks and communities for performance and video arts in Vietnam, alongside his questioning of dominant norms is all towards supporting alternative visions in a context of ideological conformity. Tran lives and works in Hanoi.

Richard Streitmatter-Tran (b. 1972, Vietnam) lives and works in Ho Chi Minh City. Since 2013, his practice has shifted from performance and new media to sculpture, painting, and drawings. This "return to craft" is fueled by a preoccupation with material knowledge over concept and is framed by a deep-rooted interest into modes of learning that used to be passed down through generations and are now being erased by the diffusion of new technologies.

His solo and collaborative works have been exhibited internationally including Hong Kong Arts Centre (2017), Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France (2015), Singapore Art Museum (2016, 2012, 2009), Asia Triennial, Manchester, United Kingdom (2011), Singapore Biennale (2008, 2006), among many others. Streitmatter-Tran has also been involved in numerous writing, education, and curatorial projects. In 2010, he established DIA/PROJECTS, an experimental art space in Ho Chi Minh City. He also co-curated with Russell Storer the exhibition The Mekong at The Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane, Australia (2009) that was part of the 6th Asia Pacific Triennial.

Biographical Text
Long-form biography for the Contributor (no character count). A short-form biography (no more than 240 characters) should be added to the Contributor's Description
The artist practice of Bui Cong Khanh (b. 1972, Vietnam) often addresses social and political implications embedded in the notion of cultural heritage. He first gained international recognition in the 1990s through performances that questioned restrictions of individual expression in his own country at a time of political turmoil. Initially focused on oil painting, his practice has come to encompass mediums such as sculpture, installation, video, and drawing often combining traditional fine arts and a conceptual approach.

Recent solo projects include exhibitions at Sàn Art and The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (2016). His works have been presented at the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, Brisbane, Australia (2009); Bangkok Art and Culture Centre, Thailand (2013 and 2015), and Arter, Istanbul, Turkey (2014). He currently lives and works between Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An, Vietnam.
