Andrea Nanetti will propose a different understanding of the maritime ‘heritage’ in terms of skills and knowledge. In the case of Allan Sekula’s work, he will show how the scholar and the artist approach to maritime heritage is quite different. He will work mainly on the misunderstandings and ideological biases of Allan Sekula’s work, especially when he brings to focus the people and the skills that constitute the maritime labour and uses the concept of “decline” for many maritime roles in the age of container.

In this presentation, Tim Bunnell examines the ‘forgotten place’ of the Liverpool’s Malay Club and the historical social networks that it anchored. The Malay Club was established in 1963 hosting seafarers from Southeast Asia. Drawing upon material from a recently completed book manuscript, From World City to the World in One City: Liverpool through Malay Lives, Bunnell traces the Malay maritime geographies, over a period of more than half a century. It began in an era prior to the use of shipping containers, the new international division of labour and economic globalisation that formed the backdrop of Allan Sekula’s work.

Joan Jonas’ work is inhabited by a multitude of human and non-human creatures, which traverse her drawings, videos, and performances in a plurality of gestures and configurations. Assembled in idiosyncratic, non-narrative manners, these animal selves propose new temporal conventions and ways of being in the world. Filipa Ramos’ (de)Tour will be a journey across the creatures Joan Jonas summons and collaborates with through her work.
