Acts of Life is a collaboration of NTU CCA Singapore and MCAD Manila, commissioned by the Goethe-Institut Singapore and Goethe-Institut Manila.

After an open call with an overwhelming response of 180 international applicants, 16 artists, writers, theorists from the region and Germany have been selected by a curatorial board to participate in a month-long residency in Manila and Singapore. Structured to encourage the heterogeneity and multiplicity of exchange through which a critical research residency is manifested, the transdisciplinary project seeks to explore the relationship between environments and humankind in times of rapid urbanisation and digitalisation.

Acts of Life Public Programme is a constellation of selected artistic research outputs culminated over the period and will happen during Singapore Art Week on 25 and 26 January 2019 and in Manila in February 2019.

Presented in an open studio accompanied with live activations, the presentation shows selected works in progress and is an encounter of how the research residency unfolds: the fostering of intellectual exchanges, lines of enquiry and the initiation of potential discourses around the intersections between art, nature, urbanity, and technology.

Curatorial Advisory Board

Description
An account of the resource
Mapletree and NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA Singapore) will co-present the Discursive Picnic on 14 October as part of Archifest 2017, with the objective to gather the community to public spaces at Mapletree Business City II. The event is organised under the Mapletree-NTU CCA Singapore Public Art Education Programme which aims to promote art appreciation to the general public. The event will kickstart with a walking tour of MBC II led by the building architect from DCA Architects Pte Ltd, the landscape architect director Prapan Napawongdee from Shma Company Limited, and curators of MBC II’s public art commissions, Professor Ute Meta Bauer and Khim Ong from NTU CCA Singapore.

Through poetry readings, well-known local poet Isa Kamari, who serves as the Deputy Director of Architecture (Design) at Singapore’s Land Transport Authority, will share stories behind urban architecture and young poet, Samuel Lee, will stand in dialogue with poetry interventions. The tour will be followed by a discussion, moderated by NTU CCA Singapore Assistant Professor Sophie Goltz, at the Green Bowl, an amphitheatre within the lush and green Central Park at MBC II. Participants, curators, and architects will have the chance to share their ideas of working with space between business/work and art/leisure.

Structured Conversation #1: Food, Air, Water

This session opens up the debate surrounding sustainability in relation to food sources, water resources, and air quality. As elements that possess fundamental significance for all life, how has urban development and technology impacted and intervened into these resources? Can sustainability be achieved only with improved technology? Is sustainability sustainable? (William S. W. Lim) How can we better understand and work with regenerative processes of nature to create a more informed way of living for all?

resource, and intervene into various social and cultural patterns? Can the shared spaces we create allow us to achieve an alternative economy based on social debate, giving, and sharing that can be managed by citizens rather than global finance?

Host: Sophie Goltz (Germany/Singapore), Assistant Professor, NTU ADM / CCA Singapore

With Qinyi Lim (Singapore), independent curator; Matthew Mazzotta(United States), artist; and Woon Tien Wei (Singapore), Post-Museum

An account of the resource
13 Dec 2014, Sat 3:00pm - 4:30pm
Block 43 Malan Road Seminar Room

Yang Fudong, a leading international figure of contemporary art and one the most important artists to emerge out of China in the 1990s, staged his first major solo exhibition in Southeast Asia at the NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore. The exhibition, Incidental Scripts, presented a selection of four works by Yang: An Estranged Paradise (1997-2002), The Fifth Night (II) Rehearsal (2010), On the Double Dragon Hills (2012) and About the Unknown Girl – Ma Sise (2013-2014). These works are emblematic of his multi-faceted approach towards the creation of visual imageries that complicates our understanding of reality / fiction, and our experience of space / time.

This artist talk provided a conversation between the artist, Yang Fudong and the two curators of the exhibition, Ute Meta Bauer and Khim Ong, with a discussion on Yang’s influences and practice as well as the thereotical framework surrounding the exhibition.

A public programme of Yang Fudong: Incidental Scripts.
