NTU CCA IdeasFest is a platform to catalyse critical exchange of ideas and encourage thinking “out of the box”. It links the artistic and academic communities with grassroots and self-organised initiatives and small-scale entrepreneurship. Following the global call for an ecological turn in art, architecture, and design, NTU CCA IdeasFest 2023 FOOD Eat. Secure. Sustain. presents projects that engage, investigate, and aim to ensure food security on a healthy planet. The vitality of food poses a wide-ranging set of questions and problems when confronted with nature’s diminishing capacity to nourish life as a result of harmful anthropocentric activity. Such challenges demand that we rethink our modes of production and consumption.

This third edition of IdeasFest draws relational links to improve the understanding of sustainable food systems and their urgencies, opening a pathway towards actionable steps to ensure food security. Current food practices are threatening both people and planet; more nourishing and sustainable ways of eating and producing need to be developed. This need to transform our societies towards socio-ecological sustainability is clear, but many proposals lack the concrete economic and political scaffolding necessary to make their implementation feasible.

The global food system encompasses all economic sectors, and understanding its components is essential for developing and executing effective measures to strengthen its sustainability. IdeasFest 2023 FOOD Eat. Secure. Sustain. looks into how various technologies affect (traditional) food practices and culinary techniques, and which of these are valued. Food security hinges on sustainable food systems which are based on subsystems, including farming, waste management, and supply infrastructures, which in turn interact with trade, energy, and health systems.

Focusing on social interactions that connect academic research with artistic and cultural fields as well as with architecture and design applications, this edition draws a direct relation between human societies and their impact on the environment. It presents environmentally friendly ways of living, exploring regional crafts, reusing, repairing und upcycling. While scientific evidence on climate change and food scarcity is widely discussed, to materialise future-proof food communities, it requires socially robust and impactful proposals that create a relay between local perspectives and knowledge generated in academia. To address food related issues and the climate crisis in a continued dialogue is necessary, as there is a risk that the gravity and urgency of this crisis will not be fully comprehended.

As a platform to feature new initiatives, NTU CCA Ideas Fest FOOD Eat. Secure. Sustain. is an invitation to share and engage in cooperative projects and collective experiences through workshops, site visits, screenings, performances, public installations, participatory projects, and a summit. This diverse programme will be enriched by presentations of start-up initiatives and public dialogues on how to support Singapore’s aspiration to meet 30% of its nutritional requirements domestically by 2030 collectively and individually. A two-day Ideas Conference will bring together a prominent group of architects, theorists, researchers, curators, designers, and community groups to discuss further ideas on sustainability, circular economy, food security, creative learning, and the potential of cultural heritage such as crafts and sustainable urbanism to envision a responsible future city.

Through exhibitions, artworks, and essays, artists and writers transcend disciplinary boundaries and linear histories to bring their knowledge and experience to bear on the fight for environmental justice. In doing so, they draw on the rich cultural heritage of the Asia-Pacific, in conversation with international discourse, to demonstrate transdisciplinary solution-seeking.

Experimental in form as well as in method, Climates. Habitats. For example, botanist Matthew Hall draws on Ovid's Metamorphoses to discuss human-plant interpenetration; curator and writer Venus Lau considers how spectrality consumes—and is consumed—in animation and film, literature, music, and cuisine; and critical theorist and filmmaker Elizabeth Povinelli proposes “Water Sense” as a geontological approach to “the question of our connected and differentiated existence,” informed by the “ancestral catastrophe of colonialism.” Artists excavate the natural and cultural DNA of indigo, lacquer, rattan, and mulberry; works at the intersection of art, design, and architecture explore “The Posthuman City”; an ongoing research project investigates the ecological urgencies of Pacific archipelagos. The works of art, the projects, and the majority of the texts featured in the book were commissioned by NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore.

Communication and Mediation, Part II — SPATIAL IDENTITY: Lectures by Bahbak Hashemi-Nezhad (United Kingdom), Wilfried Kuehn (Germany), and Laura Miotto (Italy/Singapore)

Bahbak Hashemi-Nezhad’s practice spans from neighbourhood plans and public spaces to recipes, games and objects. His approach to design draws on play theories and strategies of defamiliarisation as contextual research tools that actively engage different publics in design processes.

His presentation will focus on Hello Stranger (2016), a critical game designed with and for staff members at the Victoria & Albert’s Museum of Childhood, London, United Kingdom. Estrangement devices were created to induce “question-making” as a tool to recalibrate the overfamiliar and sense the museum anew in order to critically reflect upon the experiences it offers and the qualities it values.

In this lecture, Wilfried Kuehn will address the concept of “Curatorial Design”, an expression coined by the Kuehn himself. He will explore the role of space and architecture in artistic and curatorial practices through several case studies of exhibition displays and institutional projects he developed, including the exhibition design for Documenta11.

Laura Miotto will address site-specific spatial narratives focusing on her work for the Malay Heritage Centre in Singapore. Located in the historical precinct of Kampong Glam and re-opened to the public in 2012, the Centre undergone three years of interpretative planning that repositioned the institution in the cultural ecosystem of Singapore. Miotto will unpack site-specific strategies to regenerate connections with the many identities associated to this significant place, looking at the intersection between architecture, site, and narratives.

This workshop is part of the public programme of The Making of an Institution.
The critical spatial discussions of this panel advances from an understanding of the built environments from regional perspectives and practices, that are situated within global discourse, focusing on regional bottom-up city planning that is informed by postcolonial heritages, tropical modernities, and global architectural approaches. Reflecting also the cultural formats of how we can engage in such questions, the discussion will offer a rich source of artistic/activist interventions and their imaginary of “art on a civic scale.”

SPEAKERS
Ute Meta Bauer (Germany/Singapore), Founding Director, NTU CCA Singapore and Professor, NTU School of Art, Design and Media.
Calvin Chua (Singapore), Adjunct Assistant Professor, Architecture and Sustainable Design at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore.
Woon Tien Wei (Singapore), artist/ curator.
Sophie Goltz (Germany/Singapore), Deputy Director, Research and Academic Programmes at NTU CCA Singapore, and Assistant Professor, NTU School of Art, Design and Media
Laura Miotto (Italy/Singapore), Associate Professor, NTU School of Art, Design and Media, and Design Director of GSM Project in Singapore.

Symposium: Biodiver-city and Urban Futures 18 Jan 2020, Sat 02:00 PM - 05:00 PM The Single Screen, Block 43 Malan Road

2.00 – 2.15pm Introduction by Ute Meta Bauer, Founding Director, NTU CCA Singapore, and Professor, NTU ADM, and Laura Miotto, Associate Professor, NTU ADM

2.15 – 3.00pm Lecture: A Global Art Criticism for a Global Climate Crisis by Jason Farago, art critic, The New York Times

From Schiller and Hegel onward, art critics and philosophers of aesthetics have defined art in contrast to nature—but that distinction has collapsed in the epoch of the Anthropocene, when humans have become the authors of geology itself. This talk will consider how artists and curators have approached urbanisation, climate change, and extinction in the 21st century, from Hou Hanru’s Zone of Urgency (Venice Biennale, 2003) to Maria Stavrinaki’s Prehistory (Centre Pompidou, 2019). It will also assess the climate externalities of the global art market, and how fairs, biennials, and other nodes of the global art world might reshape themselves in a post-carbon economy.

The first genetic engineers emerged in California in the 1970s and the industry continues to bear the imprint of its origins. But Silicon Valley’s attitude towards technology is coming under increasing pressure—the world is beginning to push back against “tech bros” and social media monopolies. What does this mean for bioscience? Could we perhaps find other ways of working with and manipulating biomatter and living things that move beyond the worlds of venture capital, startups, and IPOs? Could such models even provide clues for new ways of living with others in the Chthulucene?

Guest-of-Honour: William S. W. Lim

Emerging from an exhibition, conference, and festival that explored architect and urban theorist William S. W. Lim’s concept on “Incomplete Urbanism” and his call for “Cities for People,” this publication juxtaposes research essays, visual and textual documentation with artistic interventions and spatio-temporal maps. Organised into three chapters—“The City as Living Room,” “The City as Multiple,” and “The City as Stage,” the contributions—by architects, scholars, planners, artists, activists, and curators—constitute a diverse set of analyses. Unexpected notions of planning, building, and living in Asian cities, suggest multiple paths into critical spatial practice of Asian urban space. The volume positions Lim’s thoughts, concepts, and plans for action as that of a humanist who addresses the complex topography of an ever-changing urban Asia.

Contributors include: Laura Anderson Barbata, Jiat-Hwee Chang, Thanavi Chotpradit, Calvin Chua, Yvonne P. Doderer, Chomchon Fusinpaiboon, indieguerillas, Marc Glöde, Sacha Kagan, Lulu Lutfi Labibi, Magdalena Magiera, Laura Miotto, Marjetica Potrč, Pen Sereypagna, Shirley Surya, Sissel Tolaas, Etienne Turpin and Nashin Mahtani, John Wagner, H.
