Michael T. Taussig is an Australian anthropologist and professor at Columbia University. He has visited Colombia annually since 1969. In 2012 and 2015 he made three short visits to the extensive swamps of northern Colombia in the Bolívar department, for a total of seven weeks. Two of these visits were with the Colombian law professor, Juan Felipe García, working pro bono with the peasant-colonists of the village of Buenos Aires in Colombia, consisting of 144 houses on the island of Papayal. Since 2007 the village has been under siege by oil palm plantation owners trying to rid the peasants of the land, using armed force as well as the courts. Further west in Chocó in the mid-1990s, entire communities have been subject to aerial bombing combined with paramilitary ground assault for the same purpose.

Becoming Palm
Description
An account of the resource
Becoming Palm is the outcome of a conversation between two friends, artist Simryn Gill and anthropologist Michael Taussig responding to oil palm plantations and “the enormous transformations, human, and ecological, that this crop engenders” (Michael Taussig) in two remote geographical locations, Southeast Asia and South America. Blending text with photographs and archival materials, Gill reflects on the changed landscape of Malaysia, from rubber tree plantations during the British colonial period to the oil palm crops of today. Taussig provides an account of his extensive fieldwork in Colombia and the violent impact of the oil palm industry on local communities.

Becoming Palm was launched on Saturday, 29 April 2017 in conjunction with the Singapore Art Book Fair 2017.
Join us for an evening with internationally renowned anthropologist Michael Taussig and artist Simryn Gill. The evening marks the long term inter-disciplinary collaboration between Taussig and Gill, where they will discuss their recent research regarding the violent bio-drama of oil palms, considering various socio-political issues at play.

Michael Taussig will present A Test Case: The Palm Plantation as Violence and Art, addressing the African Palm in the context of northern Colombia where it is known as a “paramilitary crop”, taking over peasant land through brutality.

Based on Taussig’s recent anthropological fieldwork in Colombia, he will construct a tableau illustrating the onslaught of problems on a small village, taking into account the palm trees as a major factor, while questioning how art and politics intertwine.

Simryn Gill will present Becoming Palm, and will speak about how the oil palm has come to embed itself in Southeast Asia. She will raise questions about its multifaceted role in the region: How do we think about the oil palm here? A tree, a landscape, a commodity, a friend, an intruder, an enemy? A saviour? A migrant? Can making art give any sense to these questions?
