This special issue of sentAp! dedicated to the late and cherished artist Roslisham Ismail aka Ise (b. Khota Bahru, 1972–2019) is published on the occasion of his solo project Campur, Tolak, Kali, Bahagi, Sama Dengan (Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide, Equals). Co-founded in 2005 by curator Nur Hanim Mohammed Khairuddin and Ise, sentAp! fostered for ten years writing about contemporary art in Malaysia and the region. Informed by the social nature of Ise’s artistic process, his penchant for connectivity and exchanges, this special issue embraces the dialogic form. In-depth interviews conducted by writer Tan Zi Hao with curators Ark Fongsmut, Russell Storer, and Khairuddin, a hybrid exchange by curator Anca Rujoiu with different members of ruangrupa close to the artist provide context, reflections, and intimate insights on Ise’s work. Full reproduction of the works Operation Bangkok (2014) and Comic Drawings (2018–20), exhibition documentation, and a related essay capture at length the artist’s much-contemplated solo project, completed posthumously.

Screenings by Filipino human-right activist, artist, and filmmaker Kiri Dalena and by American artist Lucy Raven will be followed by a conversation with both artists. Based on the true story of the drowning of a young activist, Dalena’s film From The Dark Depths (2017) opens with a beautiful and surreal sequence underwater in which a woman dances slowly brandishing a red flag. Around her, many red flags are planted in the seabed. This hypnotic and captivating dream is shuttered by sequences with authentic 16mm, analog and digital video footage from the artist’s own archive with documentation of political unrest spanning for two decades, and an ominous long-track of a police car at night prompting the citizens to respect the curfew—a gloomy reminder of a lost freedom. Lucy Raven will screen materials connected to a new film-in-progress, alongside several recent short videos.

A public programme of Arus Balik – From below the wind to above the wind and back again.

Ise’s practice is informed by expressions of popular culture such as comics and graffiti and the manner in which they serve to represent alternative histories of place and culture. He works closely with various communities and will explore the relationship between Malaysian and Singaporean communities.

True to his existing practice, during his time as an Artist-in-Residence, Ise will note take through drawing and create a series of events utilising food as a social binder whilst also going deeper into its layered histories and how this connects to Southeast Asia.

Rehearsal is a social experiment stemming from the urge to incite and foster public discussions in Singapore, addressing the city and how to organise collectively. Spaces for different groups to come together are lacking and only few opportunities exist for civil society groups and government sectors to meet and have open debates. Responding directly to the need for places that facilitate discussions and gatherings, Post-Museum‘s first Rehearsal, which took place at the Substation, invited people to spend time together and do something collectively over a 24-hour period.

Organised during CITIES FOR PEOPLE, Rehearsal is a parallel event that provides a place to further reflect on the topics discussed during the Ideas Fest, particularly in the Public Summit. This iteration of the Rehearsal will take the form of a campsite that invites the public to stay, eat, and live together over a period of three days and two nights. The space, to be built through a collective wood workshop using recycled materials from NTU CCA Singapore’s previous exhibitions, will include a kitchen, sleeping area, library, an edition of Singapore Really Really Free Market, and a meditation space. Participants are asked to shape the site according to their activities and interests throughout the event period.
