Description
An account of the resource
27 May 2016, Fri 7:30pm - 9:00pm

Artist Resource Platform: activate! II features Selene Yap, Programme Manager for Visual Arts at The Substation. Yap will engage with artist Susie Wong to foreground her artistic practice and position in the local art scene. Wong’s practice has been described as autobiographical, and the self-determined nature of her works calls into question contingencies of operating systems in the state of artistic production in Singapore – what are the implications for what is made visible and valued? In this session, Yap will converse with artist Loo Zihan on the nature of archives as cultural tools that enable/disable or include/exclude by means of collection and documentation – what are the traditional positions and normalising effects of the power of collection and display?

Description
An account of the resource
10 Jun 2016, Fri 7:30pm - 9:00pm

How are curatorial concepts shaped by artistic practices? For Artist Resource Platform: activate! III curator and writer Melanie Pocock discusses her approach to curating as a response to ideas and aesthetics of particular artworks. Highlighting her inspiration from several artists in the NTU CCA Singapore Artist Research Platform, she revisits two projects: Countershadows (tactics in evasion), an exhibition that was presented at the Institute of Contemporary Arts Singapore, LASALLE College of the Arts in 2014, and A machine for (living) dying in (2014), a solo exhibition by artist, curator and publisher Michael Lee. During the session, Pocock and Lee also reflect on reciprocal relationships between curators and artists, and their respective practices.

Habitats. Environments. weaves together image and text to address the global climate crisis. Through exhibitions, artworks, and essays, artists and writers transcend disciplinary boundaries and linear histories to bring their knowledge and experience to bear on the fight for environmental justice. In doing so, they draw on the rich cultural heritage of the Asia-Pacific, in conversation with international discourse, to demonstrate transdisciplinary solution-seeking.

Experimental in form as well as in method, Climates. Habitats. Environments. features an inventive book design by mono.studio that puts word and image on equal footing, offering a multiplicity of media, interpretations, and manifestations of interdisciplinary research. For example, botanist Matthew Hall draws on Ovid's Metamorphoses to discuss human-plant interpenetration; curator and writer Venus Lau considers how spectrality consumes—and is consumed—in animation and film, literature, music, and cuisine; and critical theorist and filmmaker Elizabeth Povinelli proposes “Water Sense” as a geontological approach to “the question of our connected and differentiated existence,” informed by the “ancestral catastrophe of colonialism.” Artists excavate the natural and cultural DNA of indigo, lacquer, rattan, and mulberry; works at the intersection of art, design, and architecture explore “The Posthuman City”; an ongoing research project investigates the ecological urgencies of Pacific archipelagos. The works of art, the projects, and the majority of the texts featured in the book were commissioned by NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore.
