Description
An account of the resource
Saturday, 18 September 2021, 1:00 – 7:00 pm Block 37 Malan Road, #01-03

Residencies OPEN showcases the diversity of contemporary art practices and the divergent ways in which artists conceive of an artwork with the studio as a constant space for experimentation and research. As a new development of her long-term research on plant consciousness and biodata sonification, Tini Aliman has come to regard ‘dead’ trees as potential archives of environmental soundscapes, witnesses of urban development and extractive capitalism, ecological events and climate change. Breathing new life into tree stumps, fragments of felled trees, and repurposed wood from previous artworks, the artist is reconfiguring these materials into kinetic and sound sculpture prototypes and she is experimenting with a range of sensory and mechanical modes of activation. Conjunctly, inspired by the structural and functional similarities between Printed Circuit Board (PCB) etching designs and forest underground network ecosystems, Tini is also speculatively imagining a functioning network of closed electronic circuits that mimics how these trees would have communicated while they were still alive. This project is realised in collaboration with Trying.sg.

In this instalment of On AiR, we hear Artist-in-Residence Tini Aliman @tin_tralala share about her artistic enquiries and friendship with fellow resident Russell Morton. Tini's research interests are rooted in forest networks, biodata signification, spatial acoustics, and plant consciousness. During the residency, she approached trees as archives of environmental soundscapes, breathing new life into tree stumps and different types of wood.

Speculative Lecture: Becoming Post-Human by Professor Ute Meta Bauer
Description
An account of the resource
Situating the post-humanist position between artificial intelligence and forces of nature, in this lecture Professor Bauer suggests that the current debate about future scenarios, reflecting economic and ecological circumstances of the present, is not about humanity in itself. Rather, Prof Bauer locates the source of tension to be within the pervasiveness of an anthropocentric perspective and action that dominates much of human life. Following the lecture, Prof Bauer will be joined by Sophie Goltz for more in-depth discussions.

Becoming Post-Human responds to the current research presentation in the Lab, Vapour Islands: to live and die well together in a thick present*. The presentation quotes the seminal text by Donna Haraway, Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene (2016), which has been read as a response to the rising sense of alarm surrounding ecological discourses on the Anthropocene, the current geological epoch named for the defining influence of human activity on the Earth’s ecosystems.
An evening with Simryn Gill and Michael Taussig - Presented by Russell Storer
Description
An account of the resource
13 Jan 2016, Wed 6:30pm - 8:00pm

Internationally renowned anthropologist Michael Taussig will present A Test Case: The Palm Plantation as Violence and Art, addressing the African Palm in the context of northern Colombia where it is known as a “paramilitary crop”, taking over peasant land through brutality.

Based on Taussig’s recent anthropological fieldwork in Colombia, he will construct a tableau illustrating the onslaught of problems on a small village, taking into account the palm trees as a major factor, while questioning how art and politics intertwine.

Artist Simryn Gill will present Becoming Palm, and will speak about how the oil palm has come to embed itself in Southeast Asia. She will raise questions about its multifaceted role in the region: How do we think about the oil palm here? A tree, a landscape, a commodity, a friend, an intruder, an enemy? A saviour? A migrant? Can making art give any sense to these questions?

Imagining New Eurasia: Visualising the Historical Precedents and Contemporary Reconstruction of New Silk Roads, Kyong Park
Description
An account of the resource
11 Apr 2017, Tue 07:30 PM - 09:00 PM

Imagining New Eurasia is a multi-year project commissioned by the Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, South Korea to research and visualize the historical precedents and contemporary reconstructions of Eurasia as one continent. The project wonders what could be the new relationship between East and West, and what would be the new identity of Eurasia. Through a narrative sequence of three distinct chapters, Imagining New Eurasia highlights the significance of cities, networks and territories within new urban, regional and continental geopolitics. The project questions whether a belief in the movements of commerce, migrations and cultural exchanges will bring about greater understanding between different societies, or if we are headed for only larger clashes of civilizations. Central to this project is the New Eurasian Pavilion, which will house panoramic projections of visualizations, accompanied by participatory exhibitions, publications and workshops.
Description
An account of the resource
26 Nov 2019, Tue 07:00 PM - 08:30 PM

Since 1984, India and Pakistan have been guarding their territories on the Siachen Glacier claiming sovereignty over this remote zone in the Himalayas with temperatures as low as -60°C. Over the years, Baptist Coelho’s research on this glacial conflict have come to encompass manifold aspects such as the day-to-day life of soldiers and Ladakhi porters. The presentation will also touch upon the artist’s ongoing research in India’s involvement with and contribution to the two world wars through a selection of artworks that probe beyond the surface to complicate, counter, and rethink histories. In conclusion, Coelho will share his recent findings on the Rani of Jhansi Regiment and the Indian National Army (INA), two military units established in Singapore during the second world war.

Residencies Studio Sessions: An Awkward Introduction – Artist Talk by Trevor Yeung
Description
An account of the resource
25 Feb 2020, Tue 07:00 PM - 08:30 PM

What can butterfly palms, passion vines, and acanthus plants tell us about human relationships, everyday behaviours, and affective (r)evolutions? How do blooms, creepers, and phytomorphic decorations relate to subjectivities, moods, and processes of cultural signification? An amateur naturalist and a socially fugitive individual, Trevor Yeung has long been obsessed with the structural logic of systems. His practice—ranging from photography and sculpture to the creation of elaborate scenarios—detects and distils patterns of co-dependency, aspirational thrusts, and forms of vulnerability embedded in human and natural ecosystems. In this talk, the artist will reflect upon his long-term engagement with the natural world and his aesthetic strategies aimed at encoding personal experiences and emotional landscapes in plant-based installations.
