<p>Co-produced by NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore and Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (TBA21) for st_age, an online platform for new commissions initiated by TBA21 as a response to the Covid-19 crisis. It is a provocation to artists, institutions, practitioners, and activists to engage with the many issues that the pandemic has made even more visible in the precarious current moment.</p>

<p><span>In the empty expanse of the screen, a delicate pattern of straight lines and curved shapes is slowly traced by an invisible hand. In Islamic visual culture, where figurative representation is notoriously forbidden, abstract geometric compositions chart spiritual journeys and convey ideals of cosmic interconnectedness. The pattern created by Dana Awartani for </span><i><span>Listen to my words</span></i><span> is inspired by the ornamental motifs of </span><i><span>jali</span></i><span> and </span><i><span>mashrabiya</span></i><span>, latticed screens used in traditional Islamic architecture to regulate light, airflow, and heat in the arid climate of many Middle Eastern countries. Besides this climatic function, </span><i><span>jali</span></i><span> also play a socially and visually divisive role, marking the confinement of women within the domestic sphere and the impossibility of seeing them clearly.</span></p>
<p><span>The entrancing emergence of the geometric design becomes progressively tangled with the voices of modern-day Saudi women that the artist invited to recite a selection of verses. The selected poems were written by Arab poetesses from the pre-Islamic era up to the 12th century, and reflect the significant but scarcely documented tradition of women’s poetry in the Arab culture. They relay first-person expressions of longing, yearning, and pride penned by women who, in different eras and in different corners of the vast Arab region, found similar strength and empowerment in their bodies and audaciously reversed the male-dominated discourse of desire. </span></p>
<p><span>By interlacing geometric symbolism and poetic utterances, Awartani’s digital animation unleashes these powerful voices once again and orchestrates an intergenerational dialogue that subtly questions the status of women in contemporary society. </span></p>

Residencies Studio Sessions: Exploring ‘Sisterhood’: How Can We Imagine A Better Way Forward?

A panel discussion with Dr Tan Kai Syng (Singapore), Artist-in-Residence, Amanda Heng (Singapore), artist, and Véronique Sapin (France/Singapore), curator. Respondents: Professor C.J. Wan-ling Wee (Singapore), School of Humanities, NTU and Dr Fang-Tze Hsu (Taiwan/Singapore), curator, NUS Museum, introduced by Dr Anna Lovecchio, curator, NTU CCA Singapore. <br /><br />How have notions and practices of sisterhood evolved over the last four decades? Is it possible to co-create a vision for the future in dialogue with each other? For the second part of her residency, Dr Tan Kai Syng picks up from when she last collaborated with pioneering feminist artist Amanda Heng and Singapore-based arts professional Véronique Sapin to trigger a collective reflection upon gender and social change in the arts in today’s Singapore and beyond. Through the lens of their artworks and projects, the speakers and respondents will address the problematic notion of ‘sisterhood’ and its relevance for envisioning a different future. <br /><br />This session will take place in the artist’s studio.

Together with Ute Meta Bauer, Founding Director of NTU CCA Singapore, they will discuss the current issues and concerns of the place, labour and capital of women within contemporary art. <br />

<br />After a revolution, what is left? How do we measure the quality or success of a socially driven art project that desires social transformation? How does a project fulfill its artistic or curatorial intents? How does a project relate to social movements? Where is a place of art in a paradigm shift? Binna Choi, Director, Casco – Office of Art, Design and Theory in Utrecht, the Netherlands, discusses the above questions, taking three major projects she co-developed at Casco in the last years: The Grand Domestic Revolution, a “living research” project inspired by late nineteenth-century “material feminist” movements in the United States that experimented with communal solutions to isolated domestic life, work, and intervention with urban planning; Composing the Commons, a research trajectory on the notion and practice of the commons; as well as her recent curatorial work for the Gwangju Biennale initiated in the aftermath of the 18 May democratic uprising that took place in Gwangju in 1980.

<br />In this talk, Rossella Biscotti interweaves thoughts and methodological considerations on some recent works that engage collective voices and female figures. She will present the research process that led to the making of Surati (2019), a work inspired by a character in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s tetralogy Buru Quartet (1980-88) who contracts smallpox voluntarily in her efforts to escape subjection as a concubine under Dutch colonialism, and Clara (2016), a work related to the eponymous female Indian rhinoceros imported to Europe by a captain of the Dutch East India Company in the 18th century. Finally, she will touch upon I dreamt that you changed into a cat (2013), a complex audio and sculptural work created through a one-year long “oneiric laboratory” with the female inmates of Venice’s women prison during which night dreams were shared and vegetable organic waste was turned into a compost installation.

The topic of gut-geographies is suggested to outline the relation of space, collective action, and phenomenological appearance, to the proposition of organic empathy—or the capacity of biological substrata in the body to problem-solve, “control, calculate, protect, and destroy” (Wilson 2004: 82). Following through key positions in post-gender theories of embodiment, the readings widely engage the interventions of “gut-feminism” with the wider problematics of public space and communal action, especially in urban contexts that are not directly addressed by the readings. By suggesting the capacity of bodies to affect and be affected in mutually implicated ways within the material or historical constraints of public space, the reading group invites participants to further relate the status of narrative truth-claims to those of the (neuro-)biological sciences.<br /><br /><p><span>22 August 2019</span></p>

NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore and the New Museum are pleased to announce participants and collaborators for the second edition of the NTU CCA Ideas Fest, IdeasCity Singapore, guest-curated by IdeasCity, taking place in Singapore and across Southeast Asia from February 15 to 22, 2020. <br /><br />Building upon the NTU CCA Singapore’s research theme Climates. Habitats. Environments. and IdeasCity’s exploration of the role of art and culture beyond the walls of the museum, IdeasCity Singapore’s residency and public program will examine the urgency of solidarity structures in negating climate change and its impact on Southeast Asia and communities worldwide.
