Toward a Practice of Institutional Critique – Judy Freya Sibayan
Description
An account of the resource
Judy Freya Sibayan looks back on 45 years of artmaking, with the first 20 years as the basis of her work of Institutional Critique. Taking the subject position of the “ex-centric” (the inside-outsider), she parodies the institution of art. It is here she is able to gain agency by enacting auto-critiques of the institution to which she belongs. She has done parodic performances of the gallery (Scapular Gallery Nomad, 1997–2002), the museum (Museum of Mental Objects, 2002–07), the art archive (The Community Archives, 2010), and the art consultancy (Performance Art Consultancy: Life, Art, Criticality, 2018) to name a few. The talk will be followed by a discussion between Sibayan and curators Ute Meta Bauer and Khim Ong.
Communication and Mediation, Part II — SPATIAL IDENTITY: Lectures by Bahbak Hashemi-Nezhad (United Kingdom), Wilfried Kuehn (Germany), and Laura Miotto (Italy/Singapore)
Description
An account of the resource

Bahbak Hashemi-Nezhad’s practice spans from neighbourhood plans and public spaces to recipes, games and objects. His approach to design draws on play theories and strategies of defamiliarisation as contextual research tools that actively engage different publics in design processes.

His presentation will focus on Hello Stranger (2016), a critical game designed with and for staff members at the Victoria & Albert’s Museum of Childhood, London, United Kingdom. Estrangement devices were created to induce “question-making” as a tool to recalibrate the overfamiliar and sense the museum anew in order to critically reflect upon the experiences it offers and the qualities it values.

In this lecture, Wilfried Kuehn will address the concept of “Curatorial Design”, an expression coined by the Kuehn himself. He will explore the role of space and architecture in artistic and curatorial practices through several case studies of exhibition displays and institutional projects he developed, including the exhibition design for Documenta11.

Laura Miotto will address site-specific spatial narratives focusing on her work for the Malay Heritage Centre in Singapore. Located in the historical precinct of Kampong Glam and re-opened to the public in 2012, the Centre undergone three years of interpretative planning that repositioned the institution in the cultural ecosystem of Singapore. Miotto will unpack site-specific strategies to regenerate connections with the many identities associated to this significant place, looking at the intersection between architecture, site, and narratives.

This workshop is part of the public programme of The Making of an Institution.
Reason to Exist: The Director’s Review. Talk by Alec Steadman and Sanne Oorthuizen
Description
An account of the resource
Cemeti – Institute for Art and Society (formerly “Cemeti Gallery”, then “Cemeti Art House”) is the oldest platform for contemporary art in Indonesia. Now in its 30th year, the artist founders have stepped aside from the day-to-day running of the organisation, staying on to advise as chairs of the board. The new team has started their role by taking a moment for public reflection to think through possible futures for the institution.

Instead of rolling out a fully developed programme, they are using 2017 to recalibrate, envisioning Cemeti as being “down for maintenance” (like a website), whilst being open to the public.

By conceptually taking the institution offline through Maintenance Works, several questions are addressed: What are the key social and political urgencies in the city, country and region? What is the social and political agency of art practice? What can institutions (of art) do? What is a gallery for? How do we work together?

In this talk, Alec Steadman and Sanne Oorthuizen will introduce Cemeti’s history, share their experience of Maintenance Works so far, as well as to dream out loud about Cemeti’s possible futures.

This talk is part of the public programme of The Making of an Institution.
Reason to Exist: The Director’s Review. Talk by Emily Pethick
Description
An account of the resource
This talk inaugurates Reason to Exist: The Director’s Review. An integral component of The Making of an Institution, this series of encounters brings together directors and founders of organisations that adopt critical and innovative strategies to advance the development of contemporary art practices and discourses. Emily Pethick will present The Showroom, a contemporary art space in London that focuses on collaborative and process-driven approaches as well as cultural production within its locality and beyond, linking experimental artistic practice to a range of communities of interest and political concerns. Responding to the context of The Making of an Institution, the talk will look at The Showroom’s mission statement and how this was developed in tandem with the organisation’s development. Pethick will also share some new approaches to the process of “evaluation” The Showroom is currently developing using mapping strategies.

This Workshop is part of the public programme of The Making of an Institution.
On Global Museums – Talk by Bartomeu Marí
Description
An account of the resource
13 Nov 2015, Fri 7:30pm - 9:00pm

Although globalisation exists for over a century, the term “global” was only used prevalently in cultural debates in the 1990s. Within the art world, globalisation bears different meanings. It firstly acknowledged that art was being produced (and exhibited and perceived) beyond the traditional centres of economic and political power, the Western metropolises. How does this affect the museum as an institution dedicated to the common interest and the public trust? While some perspectives indicate that museums should adopt the global challenge and play a global role, is it possible to establish a set of values to represent and respect local differences, taboos or symbolic relevance that are of global value?
