Description
An account of the resource
Deepening a long-standing involvement with the migrant experience, prominently manifested in the feature film A Land Imagined (2018), Yeo Siew Hua will use the residency to address the subject with the tools of cartography and music-making. Thinking in terms of borders and boundaries, either physical and symbolic, the artist intends to map out the lived experience of forced mobility and dispossession as well as its underlying power struggles and emotional trails. His research will revolve specifically on migrant songs, a cultural expression often characterized by melancholic melodies and sombre lyrics that speaks of longing, hard work, and perseverance. Conveying the experience of otherness and stirring emotions of communality, migrant songs haunts our times of unprecedented global mass migration and the contemporary debates surrounding exclusionary nationalist politics. Through participatory workshops aimed at lyric writing, music composition, and vocalisation, migrant songs will be created and disseminated in an effort to redraw boundaries of belonging.

Investigating Singapore’s role within the growing global phenomenon of “green cities”, Coburn will pursue research into Singapore’s development from “Garden City” to “City in a Garden”. He aims to delve into historical and emerging notions of green urbanism, framing the garden as a pedagogical, philosophical, and literary construct. Focusing on two specific case studies, he will place the multiple functions of Singapore Botanic Gardens in a wider historical prospective and explore the social and economic conditions which underlie the complex eco-tourist structure of Gardens by the Bay.
This performance responds to Ulrike Ottinger’s penchant to making films/documentaries based on everyday life and in diverse settings, from urban to rural environments. The title Shaman/Peasants alludes to the two factors related to the rise of communism in early 20th century China. The Chinese Communists built their revolutionary momentum with the support of the “Peasants” and later sealed their faith with the Land Reform Movement that changed the destiny of old China forever. “Shaman” is the intermediary between the deep-seated connection of human and land, who breed myths and beliefs among the people. The contemporary dance will encompass incongruous movement motifs that aim to build tension by pitching bizarre individual characters against a repressive, conforming performing ensemble.

30-min performance with post-show dialogue with Arts Fission Artistic Director Angela Liong.

Commissioned by NTU CCA Singapore and co-produced with Arts Fission.

Shaman/Peasants is endorsed and supported by the National Arts Council Arts Education Programme (NAC-AEP) under the Public Arts Programme. Schools may use the Tote Board Arts Grant to subsidise 50% of the programme ticket cost.

This is a public programme of Ulrike Ottinger: China. The Arts – The People, Photographs and Films from the 1980s and 1990s.

Samsui women migrated from Southern China to Singapore in the early decades of the twentieth century to toil mainly as construction workers. They were easily recognised through their distinctive red headscarves, black tunic and black pants which formed the livery that they wore to work every day. In the past few decades, these women have formed the subject of a plethora of social memory texts, ranging from art, literature, and popular history books to various media outlets and community exhibitions. This talk presents the different material forms through which Samsui women have been remembered and merchandised, and addresses the politics of remembering and forgetting.

This talk is part of the research project Interrogative Pattern – Text(ile) Weave by Regina (Maria) Möller at The Lab, Block 43 Malan Road, 4 December 2015 – 20 March 2016.
