Singapore’s Dragon Kiln is one of the few remaining brick-built kilns in Asia. When there is no firing, it is left empty and unused. seah’s aim is to investigate the materiality of clay by re-purposing the dragon kiln as a sound recording space, revisiting the historical site and exploring its acoustics by activating the space with vocal experimentation. With the human voice as its main focus, this project embeds vocal emotional expressions of the prosodic features of speech, as well as vocalisations with no linguistic content – hums, sobs, laughter, wailing, and gibbering. With the involvement of the migrant worker community, which has been restricted the most during the pandemic, the kiln no longer feels hollow, being filled instead with a spirit of collectivism. The spectral and uncanny qualities of place are amplified through voice and sound manipulation of fired clay objects.]]>

Venue: NTU CCA Singapore, Residencies Studios, Block 37 Malan Road, #01-01

In this artist-led session, participants will imagine themselves as archaeologists from the future. Artist-in-Residence Fazleen Karlan will guide you on a tour to discover what kind of objects are embedded in the city’s soil and understand them from a different perspective. In the first part of the workshop, participants will explore the area in the vicinity of NTU CCA Singapore at Gillman Barracks to seek out objects that have been discarded or left behind, whether accidentally or intentionally. In the second part, participants will gain hands-on experience of archaeological techniques used to process and document artefacts. Through this workshop, participants will develop an appreciation of how artefact analysis can reveal several aspects of human activities and how “ordinary relics” provide information about material forms and social behaviours of 21st century’s urban societies.

The Single Screen, Block 43 Malan Road

Contemporary Indonesian art production is distinctive in its thematic and formal diversity, a trait that has resulted from the dynamic processes of colonial and postcolonial structures of power. Visiting Research Fellow Yvonne Spielmann is interested in how Indonesian arts of the present have emerged from a syncretistic mixing of ethnic elements and are strongly imbued with cultural and religious references. In this talk, Spielmann will discuss the contexts underlying the development of modern and contemporary arts in Indonesia, and how Indonesian art newly interprets traditional techniques and materials and marries them with Western influences and pop culture.]]>
