Biographical Text
Long-form biography for the Contributor (no character count). A short-form biography (no more than 240 characters) should be added to the Contributor's Description
Stan VanDerBeek was an American experimental filmmaker at the forefront of technology. He began making films in 1955 and working with computers in 1965, when he produced multimedia pieces and computer animation in collaboration with Bell Labs. In the 1970s, he constructed “Movie-Drome,” an immersive audio-visual laboratory for a new kind of cinema-stage. His multimedia experiments in “expanded cinema” included movie murals, projection systems, planetarium events, and explored early computer graphics and image processing systems, merging art with technology and dance with films. He was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies at MIT (1969–72 and 1976–77).

Description
An account of the resource
Matthew Mazzotta’s work evolves from an interest in exploring the relationship between people and their environments, as well as between each other. His practice manifests as participatory public interventions that aim at bringing criticality and a sense of openness to notions of public space and sculpture. Mazzotta recreated his community-specific Public Art project in the form of Outdoor Living Room at a hawker centre in Tiong Bahru, Singapore.

His research also involves looking at the different possibilities and limits of public space and public artwork in Singapore.
Part of contemporary art practices in Singapore since the 1980s has been the exploration of the suppressed and less privileged, addressed by former Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong in 1999 as “heartlanders”, who live in the city-state’s public housing erected upon the tabula rasa of the razed plain in Singapore. Independent film from the 1990s in particular displayed uneasiness with the enclosure of Singapore’s nanny-state modernity, as it is often described. Some filmmakers notably took public housing to be a more enclosed space distinct from the swish commercial and business downtown. In attempting to map an urban space capable of yielding knowledge of non-elite people, filmmakers attempt to delineate the interiority of a major part of Singapore’s city space. This presentation will examine the similar and contrasting means by which some filmmakers present the city-state as a palimpsest of suppressed urban cultures.

This Exhibition (de)Tour is part of the public programme of Incomplete Urbanism: Attempts of Critical Spatial Practice.

Tomorrow Is an Island is a project by Artist-in-Residence Jason Wee that ventures into deep time and posits crisis as a frame for knowledge. The project figures forth possible futures based on the current global condition of violent populisms, fatal migrations, securitised fears, and asphyxiated commons as well as it questions the privatisation of public space and how it affects the exchanges between bodies and cities. Responding to these attitudes, Tomorrow Is an Island gathers young artists and writers to look far ahead into the future and imagine a possible handbook for travelling to tomorrow.
Bahbak Hashemi-Nezhad’s practice spans from neighbourhood plans and public spaces to recipes, games and objects. His approach to design draws on play theories and strategies of defamiliarisation as contextual research tools that actively engage different publics in design processes.

His presentation will focus on Hello Stranger (2016), a critical game designed with and for staff members at the Victoria & Albert’s Museum of Childhood, London, United Kingdom. Estrangement devices were created to induce “question-making” as a tool to recalibrate the overfamiliar and sense the museum anew in order to critically reflect upon the experiences it offers and the qualities it values.

In this lecture, Wilfried Kuehn will address the concept of “Curatorial Design”, an expression coined by the Kuehn himself. He will explore the role of space and architecture in artistic and curatorial practices through several case studies of exhibition displays and institutional projects he developed, including the exhibition design for Documenta11.

Laura Miotto will address site-specific spatial narratives focusing on her work for the Malay Heritage Centre in Singapore. Located in the historical precinct of Kampong Glam and re-opened to the public in 2012, the Centre undergone three years of interpretative planning that repositioned the institution in the cultural ecosystem of Singapore. Miotto will unpack site-specific strategies to regenerate connections with the many identities associated to this significant place, looking at the intersection between architecture, site, and narratives.

This lecture is part of the public programme of The Making of an Institution.
