Description
An account of the resource
In this series, the Centre looks back at the Residencies Programme’s archives of talks, conversations, and performances to periodically highlight select events that take on particular resonance with the present times.

Creatif Compleks – Artist talk by Michael Lee (Singapore), Artist-in-Residence
17 March 2018

Unravelling a series of intersecting reflections on the function of the artist’s studio within the arts ecology of a city, Michael Lee presents Creatif Compleks, a project developed during the residency for The Vitrine, the Centre’s smallest Space of the Curatorial. Through a diagrammatic reconfiguration of a hypothetical studio, the work takes a speculative leap into the utopian and the absurd, rendering visible the physical, psychological, and social factors layered in the most private and intimate environment of creative making.

On Museums Made by Artists, Artist talk by Tun Win Aung (Myanmar)
30 July 2019

In this talk, artist Tun Win Aung highlights the challenges related to envisioning a contemporary art institution in the context of Myanmar. As he speaks about the creation of transient museums through collaborative processes and continuous conversations with local artists, Tun Win Aung recalls on his friendship and multiple artistic partnerships with the late Phyoe Kyi, a former Artist-in-Residence, focusing on the conception and development of The Museum Project.

Residencies Insights: Models of Organisation. Images as Comrades, Film screening and discussion with Irina Botea Bucan and Jon Dean (Romania and United Kingdom), Artists-in-Residence
10 December 2019

Previous Artists-in-Residence, Irina Botea Bucan and Jon Dean, present past films and discuss their collaborative practice. Examining the formation of cultural spaces, the duo draws attention to the cumulative energies and community engagement that lie at the core of their long-term comparative research on the history, usage, and imagination of community centres as spaces for collective authorship of culture.

Biographical Text
Long-form biography for the Contributor (no character count). A short-form biography (no more than 240 characters) should be added to the Contributor's Description
Currently based in Singapore, Mike Chang’s recent works examine the concept of dwelling and home, being (and looking at) a stranger, and the overlapping of public and private spaces. Through working with architectural elements (doors, staircases, furniture), texts (speeches, monologues, letter writings), and the body (tattoos, performances), he creates narratives that explore the ambiguous relationships that exist in the everyday, resulting in works that are at times humorous, pathetic, or self-righteous.

Chang received his MFA from California Institute of the Arts (2008), and a BA from University of California, Los Angeles, USA (2006). In 2007, he was awarded The California Institute of the Arts Interdisciplinary Grant. Chang was a resident artist at Redgate Gallery in Beijing in 2006 and the artist-in-resident at The Artist Village’s Pulau Ubin Artist Residency Programme in Singapore in 2012. He is currently the resident artist at Nanyang Girls High School, Singapore. Chang’s works has been shown in many cities including Track 16 Gallery in Los Angeles, USA; Austin Museum of Art, USA; Arthouse in Texas, USA; Dobaebacsa in Seoul, Korea; Yokobo Art Space in Tokyo, Japan; with Hayama Projects Collective at The Warehouse Project in Yokohama, Japan; and Post-Museum and Port Tumasik in Singapore.

Performativity and Urban Action – Talk by Apolonija Šušteršič
Description
An account of the resource
9 Sep 2015, Wed 7:30pm - 9:00pm

Apolonija Šušteršič‘s research project, Performativity and Urban Action is focused on the current urban struggles over the provision of green spaces in large cities. We notice a high pressure on open urban spaces, many of which are in danger subjected to urban development for an economically viable middle class. This is true, i.e. for Stockholm (Rosenlundsparken, Årstafältet), Berlin (Tempelhofer Feld), Istanbul (Gezi Park), as well as Singapore (Bukit Brown Cemetery).

Šušteršič is concerned with exploring current activist practices, which employ the use of social media (websites), commemorative acts for the provision of historical knowledge and experience (guided walks, the collection of oral histories, bird watch, open classrooms), and the development of practical methods, such as action research and performative action. How can these engagements gain momentum for urban planning and design?

Description
An account of the resource
13 Aug 2019, Tue 07:00 PM - 08:30 PM

In this talk Marc Glöde will discuss the role of the filmic medium in Siah Armajani’s artistic practice and how the artist’s experimentation with computer-based graphics in the early 1970s not only expanded his practice in relation to public space and architecture to new territory, but also paved the way for a new aesthetic field. Using Armajani’s experimental films on line structures as a point of departure, Dr Glöde will also cover films by preeminent artists/filmmakers presented in the film programme that accompanies the exhibition, as well as those beyond, who produced important films relating to Armajani’s other tropes of interest: bridges, houses, and gardens.

Description
An account of the resource
1 Oct 2019, Tue 07:00 PM - 08:30 PM

Over the last two decades, Dr Colin Okashimo has sought to fuse art and landscape architecture as well as sculpture and design through a strong research narrative that highlights the unique aspects of each location. Incorporating sculptural works into his landscape designs, Okashimo creates environments that are inspired by the research of the place’s culture, history, and society. In this talk, he will reflect on the potentiality of sculpture and public art in transforming a space into a place-specific environment offering meaning and memory.
