National Gallery Singapore and NTU CCA Singapore

The NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA Singapore) presents The Geopolitical and the Biophysical: a structured conversation on Art and Southeast Asia in context, Part II, a symposium addressing the multiple notions of “Southeast Asia” and the various issues surrounding its borders, territories, dilemmas and anxieties. SEA STATE by artist Charles Lim Yi Yong, commissioned for the Singapore Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, explores the biophysical, political and psychic contours of Singapore and served as a point of departure for the symposium. Part I of the symposium took place in Venice, Italy during the opening days of the Biennale, and this second iteration will continue and deepen the discussions on the occasion of SEA STATE’s presentation at NTU CCA Singapore.

Southeast Asia, as a geographical region and conceptual category, is a contested entity shaped by diverse cultures and communities. The possibilities and uncertainties in this region – such as urban development, geopolitical relations, and anxieties surrounding national and regional identities – continue to pose unique social and political challenges.

The Geopolitical and the Biophysical: a structured conversation on Art and Southeast Asia in context, Part II brings together an array of eminent speakers and respondents to address questions of contemporary art and culture through interdisciplinary approaches – considering bodies of water as cultural-territorial spaces in an exploration of rivers, land reclamation, sea ports, and nomadic communities. The conversations arising from this symposium offers insight into the Southeast Asian consciousness and how it informs the region’s evolving relationship with the wider world.

The symposium is organised by NTU CCA Singapore under its Research & Education programme, which aims to connect research based artistic practices with other forms of knowledge production. As a prelude to the symposium, NTU CCA Singapore will screen films by Thai artist and filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul on 1 and 3 June 2016 to set up a “conversation” between two artist-filmmakers, Apichatpong and Charles Lim Yi Yong.

Imagining New Eurasia is a multi-year project commissioned by the Asia Culture Center, Gwangju, South Korea to research and visualize the historical precedents and contemporary reconstructions of Eurasia as one continent. The project wonders what could be the new relationship between East and West, and what would be the new identity of Eurasia. Through a narrative sequence of three distinct chapters, Imagining New Eurasia highlights the significance of cities, networks and territories within new urban, regional and continental geopolitics. The project questions whether a belief in the movements of commerce, migrations and cultural exchanges will bring about greater understanding between different societies, or if we are headed for only larger clashes of civilizations. Central to this project is the New Eurasian Pavilion, which will house panoramic projections of visualizations, accompanied by participatory exhibitions, publications and workshops.
The Southeast Asian region has been experiencing increasingly frequent events of transboundary haze for several decades. Much of this haze originates from Indonesia, mainly caused by fires related to traditional and commercial agricultural activities. While these activities have been credited for fuelling rapid development in Indonesia and the larger region, human and non-human communities around Southeast Asia have had to suffer its ill effects. This talk explores the concept of such pollution as a crime, both in terms of human and environmental rights. It also touches on the intricacies of local and regional politics that have permitted this ‘crime’ to continue unabated.

This Exhibition (de)Tour is part of the public programme of Amar Kanwar: The Sovereign Forest.
Jegan Vincent de Paul presents his ongoing doctoral research on the People’s Republic of China’s “One Belt, One Road” infrastructure development project. Questioning the role of art in creating new understandings of today’s geopolitical events, his project brings together critical analysis and aesthetic accounts of the “One Belt, One Road” project. Attention is paid to countries where construction and conflict overlap, particularly Burma, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

This Exhibition (de)Tour is a public programme of Charles Lim Yi Yong: SEA STATE.

The time and space of the residency are being used by Ho Tzu Nyen to map out his current and forthcoming projects for the next three years as well as their conceptual and aesthetic kinships. Other than further iterations of his growing multi-part work The Critical Dictionary of Southeast Asia (2014-ongoing), the artist is currently engaged in a series of works that probe Asia’s political histories and spiritual thought systems. Specifically, he is interested in the histories of revolt and subversion sited at both the ‘left’ and the ‘right’ end of the political spectrum, paying attention to figures, moments, and movements that eschew classification under an obsolete scheme of polarized opposition. At the same time, he is also intent on speculating about the relevance these questions will carry in 50 years’ time when our existing epistemological frameworks will be drastically altered by accelerated technological transformations, geopolitical shifts, and ecological crises at a planetary level.
