As a prelude to the symposium The Geopolitical and the Biophysical: a structured conversation on Art and Southeast Asia in context, Part II, this selection of films of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, attempts to set up a “conversation” between two artist-filmmakers, Apichatpong and Charles Lim Yi Yong. Both have explored ideas of the “entropic” in the Southeast Asian context. Lim’s film, all the lines flow out (2011) is showing at The Single Screen as part of the SEA STATE exhibition. Dr David Teh’s research on the region’s visual cultures puts special emphasis on the moving image and other non-traditional media.

This programme will be held over two evenings.

Wednesday, 1 June 2016, 7.30 – 10.00pm

Cemetery of Splendour (2015)

The plot revolves around a spreading epidemic of sleeping sickness where spirits appear to the stricken and hallucination becomes indistinguishable from reality. The epidemic is used as a metaphor for personal and Thai societal issues.

Soldiers with a mysterious sleeping sickness are transferred to a temporary clinic in a former school. The memory-filled space becomes a revelatory world for a housewife and volunteer Jenjira, as she watches over Itt, a handsome soldier with no family visitors. Jen befriends young medium Keng who uses her psychic powers to help loved ones communicate with the comatose men. Doctors explore ways, including coloured light therapy, to ease the mens’ troubled dreams. Jen discovers Itt’s cryptic notebook of strange writings and blueprint sketches. There may be a connection between the soldiers’ enigmatic syndrome and the mythic ancient site that lies beneath the clinic. Magic, healing, romance and dreams are all part of Jen’s tender path to a deeper awareness of herself and the world around her.

Friday, 3 June 2016, 7.30 – 10.00pm

Tropical Malady (2004) | 118 mins

Keng is a soldier assigned to a post in a small city in rural Thailand. The troops’ main duties, it seems, is to investigate the mysterious slaying of cattle at local farms. While in the field one day, Keng meets Tong. Both of them share a connection and embark on a romance, taking trips in the countryside.

One night, the country boy wanders off into the dark. The film’s narrative abruptly shifts to a different story, about a soldier sent alone into the woods to find a lost villager. In the woods, the soldier encounters the spirit of a tiger shaman, who taunts and bedevils the soldier, causing him to run through the woods and become lost and isolated himself.

This screening is a public programme of Charles Lim Yi Yong: SEA STATE.

The Single Screen, Block 43 Malan Road

The histories of photography and film in Thailand intersect in multiple ways. Yet the revelatory, iconic nature of photography in this context has meant that it has often been considered separate from filmic practice in which the "real" lacks weight. The trans-disciplinary nature of Apichatpong Weerasethakul's practice, described by Dr May Adadol Ingawanij and Dr David Teh as "permeable," complicates these distinctions. Despite Apichatpong's preference for cinema and video, the photographic is implied through the slow, rhythmic pace of his time-based works, as well as their reconstituion as stills. By aligning these references with the implications of different media forms in the Thai context, this presentation considers the role of the photographic and the filmic to reveal and conceal, and how medium specificity is implicated in the visualisation of traumatic pasts that resist representation.

Participants will address the death or afterlife of a person, idea, technology, place, or community, that is connected to Singapore, through a creative form that begins with texts from the Reading Room. Participants approach these texts as death poems and elegies directed towards their identified object, whose presence in current reality is arguably tenuous— an endangered form or an object that is yet to come, that may have shifted the directions of our worlds, but is currently diminished in its form—and situate this towards something else within the exhibition space. Instead of focusing on built solutions, the group will examine and concoct the temporalities and topologies of loss, dispossession, longing, memorialisation, and ruin. Participants should come prepared with a brief idea of the endangered or expired object/subject/event they are addressing.

Claiming the role of the artist as “cultural ventriloquist” who lends multiple voices to spectral matters and speculative histories, for this talk Zarina Muhammad will weave together research threads and aesthetic strategies that underpin the main projects she developed in the past year: Talismans for Peculiar Habitats, Pharmacopeias for Accredited Agents of Poisoning and Apotropaic Texts, and Pragmatic Prayers for the Kala at the Threshold. The artist will unpack the polyphonic narratives embedded in her installations and expand upon her long-term engagement with Austronesian cosmologies, guardian spirits, non-conforming bodies, and memory lapses occurring in the cultural shifts from pre-colonial to post-colonial times.

The talk will take place in the artist’s studio.

* Penunggu refers to the spirit that guards, supervises, or protects a particular place, region, nation, age group, country, culture, or occupation. It is believed that it can be protective, benign or malevolent. Though not entirely synonymous with the Kala, the gate guardian in sacred architectures, the penunggu is also a guardian of spaces. The root word of ʻpenungguʼ is derived from the Malay word ʻtungguʼ, which means ʻto waitʼ.
Deep in the tropical rainforest of Southeast Asia, a series of incantations invoke the spirits of yore, including those of the nimble, tricksy Kancil (mouse-deer) and the ferocious Buaya (crocodile). The ancient animals enact their folkloric vendetta in a furious dance of dominance, yet long-overdue vengeance is shrouded in smoke. Meanwhile, an effigy of a tree is burning, summoning a whole other host of spectres and ancestors. Conceived during the month of the Hungry Ghost Festival in 2019, while large-scale fires were consuming the forests of Indonesia, Yeo Siew Hua’s An Invocation to the Earth confronts climate collapse through the lens of pre-colonial folktales and animistic rituals. Through spoken spells and bodily entanglements, the video conjures up the fallen environmental defenders of a region ridden with ecological threats in the hope that their spirits will be reborn once again.
