Irina Botea Bucan and Jon Dean’s artistic collaboration is based upon an interest in the decentralization of cultural discourse and the possibility of sustaining creative differentiation outside of a dominant hegemonic system of values and critique. Through merging various roles (visual artists, filmmakers, educators, community workers), they have developed a ‘three-way’ symbiotic artist-educator-research methodology that they apply in various socio-cultural contexts, and seek to place people’s experiences as the central ‘vehicle of meaning’. Combining reenactment strategies with auditions, elements of cinéma vérité and forum theatre, they look into the role conflict, history, language and music play in the formation of the individual and the community. In Singapore, the artists are continuing their long-term comparative research into the history, usage, and the possible imagination of cultural houses/community clubs as places where “culture” can be authored collectively. During this programme, they will present previous films and discuss their collaborative practice.

Description
An account of the resource
With Priyageetha Dia (artist, Singapore) and Seelan Palay (artist, founder Coda Culture), moderated by Sophie Goltz (Deputy Director, Research, NTU CCA Singapore and Assistant Professor, School of Art, Design and Media, Nanyang Technological University)

In this conversation, Dia will introduce her artistic intervention Golden Staircase (2017). Taking over a block of steps from a HDB staircase in Jalan Rajah, the work stirred controversy and public debate on how contemporary art could relate to the built environment we live in. The debate was exceptionally amplified on social media. Palay will discuss his artistic practice and his public performance 32 Years: The Interrogation of a Mirror (2018), a conceptual work in progress. In 2018, the public (performative) action led to his arrest and resulted in an island-wide debate around what can be considered a work of art in public. The discussion with both artists will look into recent urban developments and artistic approaches in the public sphere.

Description

In this conversation, Wei Leng Tay and Dr Fang Tze Hsu will discuss how they think about and work with representation in their respective practice. Wei Leng will touch upon past works, such as you think it over slowly, slowly choose… (2018) and The first chapter it begins with the horses (2017-18), and the new works she is developing during the residency, while Fang Tze will expand upon her ongoing research on Taiwanese photo and video artist Kao Chung-li and Okinawan photographer Toyomitsu Higa. Intertwining the points of view of an artist and a researcher/curator, they will challenge each other to reflect upon issues of representation and the subjective entanglements embedded in the process of image-making.

The talk will take place in the artist’s studio.

Description
An account of the resource
Thai artist Arin Rungjang and Director of Curatorial, Programmes and Publications at the Singapore Art Museum, Dr June Yap, will discuss conditions in the nation’s post-colonial period of economic development and modernisation. Subject to precarious economic circumstances, many sought greener pastures abroad, where they also, unfortunately, encountered forms of discrimination. Drawing upon the experiences of the artist’s father, as a Thai migrant worker in Germany, Rungjang will connect familial histories with present-day observations.
NTU CCA Singapore is pleased to present the rough cut of A Certain Illness Difficult to Name (2018), a new film created by experimental filmmaker Taiki Sakpisit during his three-month residency at the Centre. Filmed entirely in Singapore, the work is a poetic meditation on states of transition, a spiritual quest imbued with a mysterious sense of malaise. Slowly panning over the landscape and pausing on enigmatic frames, the camera quietly leads the viewer on a visual and aural journey across different layers of emotional intensity. The preview of A Certain Illness Difficult to Name will be preceded by the screening of Trouble in Paradise, a short film realised in southern Thailand in 2017, shown in Singapore for the first time on this occasion.

A Certain Illness Difficult to Name, Singapore, 2018, 18min Trouble in Paradise, Thailand, 2017, 13min

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the artist.
