<b><i><br /></i></b><i>Night Fishing</i>, 2011, 33 min, Korean with English subtitles <br />In Night Fishing a man casually sets up for a fishing trip at the water’s edge. Evening comes and a tug on his line presents him with the body of a woman. While he tries to disentangle himself from the fishing lines, she comes alive. The scene changes and the woman is now a shaman priestess in a funeral ritual for a man who drowned in a river. He speaks through her to his relatives, asking for forgiveness. <br /><br /><i>Manshin: Ten Thousand Spirits</i>, 2013, 104 min, Korean with English subtitles <br />Manshin: Ten Thousand Spirits is a documentary telling the story of a woman who — shunned for being possessed by spirits as a girl and oppressed for following superstitions as an adult — grew up to be Korea’s greatest shaman, and is now honoured as a national treasure. <br /><br />This screening is part of the Education and Public Programme of <em>Joan Jonas: They Come to Us without a Word.</em>

<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><em><br />Lives of Performers </em>by Yvonne Rainer, USA, 1972, 90 min, English</span><br /><em>Lives of Performers</em>, the first feature film by the choreographer and co-founder of the Judson Dance Theater Yvonne Rainer, explores the overlapping and at times, disjunctive languages of cinema and performance. Developed from a dance performance choreographed by Rainer, it plays with generic conventions of melodrama to explore the dilemmas of women struggling to define themselves in relation to masculinist scripts.</p>
<p><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><em>Wind</em>, Joan Jonas, USA, 1968, 5.37 min, Silent</span><br /><em>Wind</em> is a 1968 performance film. Cutting between snowy fields and a raw seashore, Jonas focuses on a group of performers moving through a windswept landscape. The 16mm film — silent, black and white, jerky, and sped-up — evokes early cinema, while its content locates it in the spare minimalism of the late 1960s.</p>
<p><span><span style="text-decoration:underline;"><em>Duet</em>, Joan Jonas, USA, 1968, 4.25 min. English</span><br /></span><em>Duet</em> is a classic early video performance. In this seminal exploration of the phenomenology of video as a mirror and as “reality,” Jonas, face-to-face with her own recorded image, performs a duet with herself.</p>

<br />Mark Nash will discuss selected works chosen from a period of intense experimentation with the new medium of video art. In their early works Richard Foreman, Terry Fox, and Martha Rosler explore quasi-didactic scenarios similar to those Jonas has employed in works including <i>They Come to Us without a Word</i>. <br />Compared to the abstract language and referential contexts behind Artist-in-Residence Haegue Yang’s installative sculptures, her video works reveal a directly narrative approach. Consisting of diaristic video essays of seemingly insignificant city scenes, <i>Video Trilogy: Unfolding Places (2004), Restrained Courage (2004) and Squandering Negative Spaces</i> (2006) contemplates upon sentiments of solitude and vulnerability. While the intimate yet incongruous voice-over monologue unfolds episodes of failed interactions and observations of everyday life, Video Trilogy evokes a deeply intimate sense of place, where the artist binds together the mundane and the poetic through the artists’ subtle interventions such as displaced origami and autonomous manifestations of light. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the artist.

<br />When Sheldon Renan and Gene Youngblood at the end of the 1960s coined the term <i>Expanded Cinema</i>, they were interested in a revision of the cinematic conventions. Addressing specifically questions concerning the spaces of film (the imaginary spaces, the depicted spaces, as well as the architectural environments) made clear what kind of impact the cinematic apparatus had on our ways of watching films. Artists and critics began to critically approach the environment and technology of the filmic experience and ask how this assemblage was influencing our perception and our ways of thinking. <br /><br />The screening and workshop <i>Expanding Cinematic Spaces</i> by Visiting Research Fellow Marc Glöde will take a closer look at this development – its historic implications as well as its relevance for today. It will combine some outstanding artistic film works with remarkable examples that offered different spatial experiences. <br />

<br />As a prelude to the symposium <i>The Geopolitical and the Biophysical: a structured conversation on Art and Southeast Asia in context, Part II</i>, this selection of films of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, attempts to set up a “conversation” between two artist-filmmakers, Apichatpong and Charles Lim Yi Yong. Both have explored ideas of the “entropic” in the Southeast Asian context. Lim’s film, all the lines flow out (2011) is showing at The Single Screen as part of the SEA STATE exhibition. Dr David Teh’s research on the region’s visual cultures puts special emphasis on the moving image and other non-traditional media. <br /><br />This programme will be held over two evenings. <br /><br /><strong>Wednesday, 1 June 2016, 7.30 – 10.00pm</strong> <br /><br /><i>Cemetery of Splendour</i> (2015)<br /><br /><p>The plot revolves around a spreading epidemic of sleeping sickness where spirits appear to the stricken and hallucination becomes indistinguishable from reality. The epidemic is used as a metaphor for personal and Thai societal issues.</p>
<p>Soldiers with a mysterious sleeping sickness are transferred to a temporary clinic in a former school. The memory-filled space becomes a revelatory world for a housewife and volunteer Jenjira, as she watches over Itt, a handsome soldier with no family visitors. Jen befriends young medium Keng who uses her psychic powers to help loved ones communicate with the comatose men. Doctors explore ways, including coloured light therapy, to ease the mens’ troubled dreams. Jen discovers Itt’s cryptic notebook of strange writings and blueprint sketches. There may be a connection between the soldiers’ enigmatic syndrome and the mythic ancient site that lies beneath the clinic. Magic, healing, romance and dreams are all part of Jen’s tender path to a deeper awareness of herself and the world around her.<br /><br /></p>

<p>Keng is a soldier assigned to a post in a small city in rural Thailand. The troops’ main duties, it seems, is to investigate the mysterious slaying of cattle at local farms. While in the field one day, Keng meets Tong. Both of them share a connection and embark on a romance, taking trips in the countryside.</p>
<p>One night, the country boy wanders off into the dark. The film’s narrative abruptly shifts to a different story, about a soldier sent alone into the woods to find a lost villager. In the woods, the soldier encounters the spirit of a tiger shaman, who taunts and bedevils the soldier, causing him to run through the woods and become lost and isolated himself.</p>

<br />NTU CCA Singapore is pleased to launch its very first publication <i>Theatrical Fields Critical Strategies in Performance, Film, and Video</i>. The reader is published by NTU CCA Singapore, König Books, London, and Bildmuseet, Umeå. Edited by Ute Meta Bauer and Anca Rujoiu with the editorial project under the management of Leah Whitman-Salkin, the publication has been elegantly designed by Sam de Groot. <br /><br />Based on an exhibition of the same name, <i>Theatrical Fields</i> presents seminal texts and newly commissioned essays that explore theatricality as a critical strategy in performance, film, and video. The reader stages conversations between theatre and visual arts, theoretical discourse and artistic practice juxtaposing artists and theoreticians from different generations and backgrounds who share a communal interest in the theatricality as a methodology to address questions of ideology, gender, power relations. <br /><br />The reader includes seminal texts from Antonin Artaud, Mikhail Bakhtin, Ute Meta Bauer, Bertolt Brecht, Jacques Derrida, Regis Durand, Josette Féral, Jean-François Lyotard; commissioned essays from Giuliana Bruno, Eva Meyer, Timothy Murray, Katharina Sykora, Marina Warner, documentation of the exhibition <i>Theatrical Fields</i> curated by Ute Meta Bauer with Anca Rujoiu at Bildmuseet, Umea (2013) and itinerated at NTU CCA Singapore (2014) in a different configuration, excerpts of conversations between artists and curators. Combining linear and nonlinear narrative, <i>Johanna d’Arc of Mongolia</i> illustrates Ottinger’s appropriation of theatrical strategies in the cinematic, such as eccentric costumes, lush mise-en-scènes, exaggerated acting.

<br />Re-shaping the City of Singapore and creating its new appearance has not only an influence on how we experience the city on a direct everyday basis, it has also influenced the films and images that are produced in Singapore and in so far globally changed the visual idea of the city. These changes of the urban experience have been very prominent in classical narrative films from Singapore, which lead the focus of attention to interesting new social aspects of the new city. The series <i>Meet me in the City</i> will take a look at some of these film classics and provide the opportunity to re-encounter some of these landmark Singaporean films. <br /><br />Friday, 2 December 7.30 – 10.00pm <br /><br /><i>Mee Pok Man</i>, Eric Khoo, Singapore, 1995, 98 min <br /><br />Based on a short story by late writer Damien Sin, <i>Mee Pok Man</i> follows a lonely mee pok seller as he pines for Bunny, a prostitute who dreams of a better life. An untimely accident brings them closer, building into a relationship that is at once tender, heart-wrenching and surreal at the same time. In 2015, the film was restored by the Asian Film Archive and presented at the 26th Singapore International Film Festival. <br /><br />This film is rated M18. Audience will be required to verify age at the door. The screening of this film is supported by Asian Film Archives, Singapore. <br /><br />Friday, 16 December 7.30 – 10.00pm <br /><br />12 Storeys, Eric Khoo, Singapore, 1997, 105 min <br /><br />The film depicts a day in a HDB block of residential flats in Singapore with all the action occurring within a 24-hour period. There are essentially three main storylines: Ah Gu, a middle-aged man brings home a pretty young wife from China, and struggles to cope with her overly high expectations. San San lives alone with only suicide on her mind. A meeting with the daughter of her mother’ s former employer, Rachel, acts as a trigger for an outpouring of sadness. With their parents away, upright but overbearing eldest brother Meng (Koh Boon Pin) takes the opportunity to lord it over his rebellious younger sister, Trixie (Lum May Yee) and little brother Tee (Roderick Lim). Meng’ s persistent interest in Trixie’ s personal life leads to first, an interrogation, then an argument, and ultimately something far more explosive. <br /><br />The screening of this film is supported by Asian Film Archives, Singapore. <br /><br />Friday, 23 December 7.30 – 10.00pm <br /><br /><i>Eating Air</i>, Kelvin Tong and Jasmine Ng, Singapore, 1999, 100 min <br /><br />Ah Boy, the anti-hero, leads a gang of arcade-playing, motorcycle-riding, rooftop-gathering young cronies. The street-corner gangs are not sophisticated like organised criminals, but they have their own brand of honour. Petty fights are common, and so are motorcycle challenges. But when his best friend Ah Gu chances upon drugs and borrows from loan sharks, their friendship put to a test, as the challenges that they face become more and more dangerous. <br /><br /><i>Eating Air</i> filmmakers Kelvin Tong and Jasmine Ng will be in attendance. <br /><br />Friday, 30 December 7.30 – 10.00pm <br /><br /><i>Singapore Dreaming</i>, Woo Yen Yen and Colin Goh, Singapore, 2006, 105 min <br /><br />Encompassing two generations of the middle-class Loh family, <i>Singapore Dreaming</i> tracks the family’s trials as its members chase their dreams. The son and the apple of his father’s eye, Seng, returns from his studies in USA to a devoted girlfriend and to family pressure of getting married and making a name for himself. His sister, Mei, married to an emasculated husband and expecting, has never been able to let go of the parental neglect she feels she has suffered. Their parents, Poh Huat and Siew Luan, have over the years fallen into a routine of banal preoccupations – nagging and domestic chores on her part; fantasies about amassing material possessions on his. When the patriarch wins the lottery, everyone rests their hopes on the windfall delivering them from their struggles. They soon discover that their dreams remain elusive and that the pleasures derived from material wealth are as transitory as the possessions themselves. <br /><br />The screening of this film is supported by Asian Film Archives, Singapore. <br /><br />This screening is a public programme of <i>Incomplete Urbanism: Attempts of Critical Spatial Practice.</i>
