Whilst in residence, Hardono will draw from personal experiences, to inquire into the impact that societal changes, such as the affect of censorship, have had on popular culture, local music and literature. His research methodology will be based on observations of human behaviour, field records, filming and the gathering of daily objects and images in Singapore and the context of Southeast Asia. In line with his current practice, Hardono will also further explore various approaches towards collaborative performances.

Gary Ross Pastrana will collect “Fifty Shared Words” as a response to the overlaps in histories and languages in the various parts of Southeast Asia. With these words he will write short descriptions, musings, meditations or anecdotes about each word, comparable in format with Primo Levi’s Periodic Table. Research will be kept to informal conversations with artists and other everyday people encountered during the residency to keep the whole experience direct, unmediated, and current. The aim is not to come up with an academic linguistic study but to encounter words in actual usage by real people and in the process learn through communication. Short stays in other neighboring countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, (to meet artists and visit artists communities) is also worked into the plan to expose to varying settings and the more subtle differences in context and usage of the words.

Guo-Liang Tan’s practice revolves around how the space of painting and writing can be charged with affect and otherness. Tan is interested in how this sense of absence, pointing towards an imagined past and/or future, frames our present-ness and of our subjectivities. Tension between the phenomenological and the psychological are played out in the process of painting and writing, staging congruencies and slippages that occurs within material and language. <br /><br />Tan’s current research is the notion of touch as an indexical and invocative gesture. Inherent in the materiality of the fabric as a substrate to receive and retain traces is a certain resistance, which provides a counter- movement that simultaneously works along and against gestures of painterly touch. The final compositions are an interplay between design and chance which re(as)sembles traces and modes of Modernist abstraction while hinting at folds of the corporeal. Parallel to the paintings is a series of text-based videos that investigate the possibility of language to suspend the imaginary space between touching and not touching, speech and non-speech. Staging scenes between the haptic and the haunted, these works play with the conventions of reading and listening where voices register tones of intimacy and ambivalence in equal measures.

Li Ran provides exhibitionary structures in which to look at wider dynamics of fabricated structures in narrative and history. In <i>Beyond Geography</i> (2012) he looks at the National Geographic style of the anthropological but with the caricature of the natives and anthropologist played by the same race. Li has also looked at the idea of re using elements from projects and what it means to re contextualising work to comment on the circulation of cultures bringing to attention forms of mis/communication. For his research, Li will work closely with Singapore Management University faculty Rowan Wang to understand the dissemination of protestant ideals in Singapore, not only through the lens of theology, but as a form of ideological management. Li will build an open platform, re purposing works and structures from past work, incorportated into an interviewing structure.

Mary Sherman will introduce TransCultural Exchange’s international conferences which were originally created to help American artists and arts organisations become aware of the networks of international residencies that exist around the globe. The benefits of statistical information TransCultural Exchange has gathered has successfully advocated for the vital and important creative role that Artists-in-Residence play in today's increasingly interconnected and results-driven world. Sherman will connect with local artists, curators and educators to gain an awareness of Singaporean arts communities as well as the histories of cultural exchange that have taken place in Singapore.

Since 2014, Min Thein Sung has been collecting historical, sociological, and material data for the project <i>Mr Tailor had a dream last night</i>: a soft-sculpture installation made of raw linen fabrics that recreates a small tailor shop, a space for craftsmanship that is still common in Myanmar but fast-dwindling in Singapore. Addressing the alienation of the consumer from the garment-maker and the resilience of this kind of handicraft in the face of today’s industrial mass production, the artist intends to engage with local taylors and with the tools of the trade in order to create a new sculptural piece.

Mona Vatamanu & Florin Tudor’s artistic practice spans diverse media including film, photography, painting, performance, and site-specific projects. Through their works, they confront the traumatic legacy of Communism in their native Romania and Eastern Europe, while wrestling with the ongoing challenge of how to process history. As part of the residency so far they have taken a look at the surrounding environment of both the natural jungle like environment and various constructions happening in Gillman Barracks to explore various social dynamics. They have taken the prevalent presence of migrant labour as a starting point to think about construction, the literal building of a nation, migration and the emotional realities of itinerancy and how this may affect social interactions.

Everything begins from small steps. That was the first thing that came through History of Merchant, a solo exhibition of Husein’s work in 2012. A small-intimate approach to his family journeys, from Hadramaut, in Middle East to South East in Indonesia. By collecting, archiving, and listening to the elders stories, the work started to build a strong foundation that led him to one project and then another project. Since that, he started to further seek and question Arabic descendants in Indonesia. The ideas go across the border between art, politics, economy, and also science. What did they do? Why are they doing that? How do they live and adapt? How they see themselves now? As Arabic-Indonesian or Indonesian-Arabic? These questions about identity, adaptation, survival, daily life culture, and also originality are evoked. While doing research for that project, Husein found stories about the transition, from Hyderabad to Singapore. These descendants were supposed to go directly to Indonesia through the Malaya Peninsula but stopped and stayed in Singapore for two years due to the critical situation that happen between British and the Dutch thus it has been said, to have developed a new community. This is the point of entry into Husein’s research for the NTU CCA Residencies Programme. The topic is simplified into three aspects: Identity, Transition, and Journeys. By using those as the main core Husein will explore the story of Arabic society in Singapore, seeking artefact and archives through the stories from the citizens.
