Regarded as a successful model of strategic governance and urban planning across Asia, Singapore has shared her infrastructure plans and industrial development expertise with other countries since the 1990s. Choy Ka Fai intends to research the tensions and ideals that underlie the establishment of Singapore as a utopian “prototype city” investigating the multiple narratives that frame the efforts to export and, occasionally to forge, such an utopia.

In the past four years, de Boer has been questioning her practice and the impact that critical recognition and the professionalization of her work as a practicing artist has made upon her creative process. At this self-reflective juncture, the artist is interested in the conditions for thinking and inspiration, investigating notions of open-ended time and of personal and societal rhythms. In her view, to place aimless, untroubled” time in relation to creativity, research, and production offers a political counterpoint to the outcome-driven model that rules the art world and our contemporary life, opening up a space for creation that allows for experimentation, boredom, and failure. During the residency, de Boer plans to further develop this research engaging in conversation with a variety of experts that can help her reframe the question of time.

Mary Sherman will introduce TransCultural Exchange’s international conferences which were originally created to help American artists and arts organisations become aware of the networks of international residencies that exist around the globe. The benefits of statistical information TransCultural Exchange has gathered has successfully advocated for the vital and important creative role that Artists-in-Residence play in today's increasingly interconnected and results-driven world. Sherman will connect with local artists, curators and educators to gain an awareness of Singaporean arts communities as well as the histories of cultural exchange that have taken place in Singapore.

Over the course of the residency, Taiki Sakpisit plans to develop A Certain Illness Difficult to Name, an installation that addresses instances of trauma and violence embedded in the process of nation building in Singapore and Thailand through the lens of an individual's point of view. Looking at historical events through the eyes of a single character is an intentional strategy aimed to personalize and humanize history while, at the same time, composing an allegory of collective torment. Having so far mostly produced experimental short films, Taiki aims to use the space of the studio to test a more complex visual and aural installation that can elicit the sensorium of the viewer and trigger out-of-body experiences.

The performers may use furniture, kitchenware or anything available. The initial idea of this project came from feeling tired about low-end speakers and wanting to create a sonic space without the expense or formalities which go with this. He says the concert is a temporary mandala, a metaphor for the world. Within this environment is a destabilisation of hierarchy and there is no difference between large and small or professional and amateur. The quality of listening is from participants’s devotion.

Object-orientated ontology (OOO) is a 21st-century school of thought that rejects the primacy of human existence over non-human objects, thus generating different perspectives on ecological thinking. Combining an ongoing interest in natural environments threatened by urban development with his practice of capturing sonic emanations of the non-human inhabitants of our planet, Tang aims to further his understanding of OOO and sharpen theoretical tools that challenge anthropocentric hierarchies and understanding of nature. The space of the studio provides him with the opportunity to test immersive multisensorial installations that visualize and animate field recordings taken in various natural environments in Singapore. During the residency, the artist is working on new sound compositions and modes of listening that forge alternative connections between humans and nonhumans. He is also experimenting with drawing to create “visual scores” in response to his soundscapes.

Formally trained in sculpture, Zul Mahmod has continued to build and expand his practice over the last three years to include sculpted sound and live sound performances. Zul’s practice investigates the aural architecture of spaces in order to explore the emotional, behavioural and visceral responses of its inhabitants. While in residence, Zul will explore the aural relationship between readymade sound sculptures and the architecture of space. Sonic characteristics, forms and textures of everyday objects will be examined in order to compose an orchestra of sonic sculptures.

Drawing on his multidisciplinary sensibility in music-making, design, and curating, Yuen Chee Wai will dedicate the residency to explore the liminality between installation, situation, and performance researching possible spatial, visual, and sonic configurations of devices such as self made speakers using found objects, audio tape, and other motors and sensors. Working towards the production of a solo album, he will gather and sample physical elements present at Gillman Barracks, using forest foliage as sound conductors and collecting field recordings to expand the vocabularies featured in his music. Along the process, the studio will be treated as a site-specific musical instrument which—through a series of recording and interfacing sessions, either individual or collaborative—will be turned into an environment for feedback and interface.

Deepening a long-standing involvement with the migrant experience, prominently manifested in the feature film A Land Imagined (2018), Yeo Siew Hua will use the residency to address the subject with the tools of cartography and music-making. Thinking in terms of borders and boundaries, either physical and symbolic, the artist intends to map out the lived experience of forced mobility and dispossession as well as its underlying power struggles and emotional trails. His research will revolve specifically on migrant songs, a cultural expression often characterized by melancholic melodies and sombre lyrics that speaks of longing, hard work, and perseverance. Conveying the experience of otherness and stirring emotions of communality, migrant songs haunts our times of unprecedented global mass migration and the contemporary debates surrounding exclusionary nationalist politics. Through participatory workshops aimed at lyric writing, music composition, and vocalisation, migrant songs will be created and disseminated in an effort to redraw boundaries of belonging.
