In the early 20th century, the South American rubber industry entered a phase of decline as a result of the successful implantation in Southeast Asia of a batch of <i>hevea brasiliensis</i> (rubber plant) seeds, brought to the region from London’s Kew Gardens in 1877. Expanding the lines of inquiry of a previous project—<i>The Skin Labour</i> (2016)—that examined rubber plantations in the Ecuadorian Amazon, Adrián Balseca follows the “trajectory of latex” in the Global South by investigating power relations, labour processes, and patterns of bodily movements devised for rubber harvesting in Singapore and Malaysia at a crucial moment of transition from manual to mechanical techniques. In particular, furthering his investigation of social-environmental issues and the “extractivist” dynamics that underscore capitalistic development, the artist will research designs and graphic patterns of incision employed for tapping rubber trees and the manifold implications entailed by the relocation of labour practices in different political, cultural, and environmental contexts.

Intrigued by the fundamental elements of mutual respect and equal status that underlie practices of hospitality, Alecia Neo seeks to experiment with “acts of radical hospitality” to push forward a critical engagement with the culture of our time. Today, hospitality is mostly associated with the tourism industry and private etiquette but it can also be understood as a political practice whereby a community negotiates its identity and its relationship with “the others.” Engaging with diverse rituals of hospitality practiced in the region, the artist aims to understand how communities draw boundaries and connect with outsiders. During the residency, she will reach out to several individuals and groups and she will invite them to perform acts of sharing and exchange as a form of empowerment. Through observing and experimenting with these rituals, Neo aims to gain a better understanding of h ow hospitality may serve as a resource to establish forms of connectedness across different communities

Alex Murray-Leslie is part of Chicks on Speed, a multidisciplinary art group and pioneers in the cross pollination of Pop Music, Performance Art, Fashion and New Media. Murray-Leslie will research into computational footwear in live art <i>The BipedShoe Project</i>, acoustic shoe tools for performance), through the production of new knowledge via experimental research and new collaborations with local Singaporean arts practitioners, curators and academics. She will integrate her experiences while in residence into a new body of performative work around the BipedShoes, which is at the core of her ongoing research into <i>Objectinstruments</i> and their effects on dramaturgie in artformances (live art performances).

Through his research on the theory and practice of “the hyperimage”, Alfredo Cramerotti aims to research and meet artists, curators, and writers working at the cusp of visual information and networked imaging, in order to scope future collaborations. During his residency, Cramerotti will also present a lecture titled <i>The Curator as Meta Artist. Modes of Curation in the Age of [Aesthetic] Uncertainty</i>, discussing three different modes in which curatorial practice can function.

During her residency, Alice Miceli plans to expand her current project, <i>In Depth (landmines)</i> (2014-ongoing). So far she has conducted field research in Cambodia, Colombia, and Bosnia where she photographed several mine-contaminated areas. The artist plans to examine other sites where landmines and unexploded ordnance remain an active deadly threat. She is especially interested in the landmine situation in Angola, the most heavily mined country in the world as a result of decades of conflict and civil war. The process of gathering relevant materials and managing the complex logistics required by trips to such dangerous areas are all essential components of the work. The artist intends to use her studio to experiment with different spatial presentations of <i>In Depth (landmines)</i> and to initiate new lines of research around the subject of landscape, looking into areas affected by plagues and epidemics and exploring the possibilities involved in their photographic representation.

Amanda Heng has championed the representation of women within exhibitions in Singapore through examining notions of the female body through her performances, her work with WITAS (Women in the Arts Singapore) and through various artists’ initiatives in the early 1990s.Heng's recent work is focused on the issues of history, memory, communication and human relationships in urban conditions.

Amy Lien & Enzo Camacho’s residency research focuses on employees of financial institutions in Singapore. It fixates on the college graduates who have recently entered the field, and who are becoming biologically shaped by the dominating but fraught system of globalized financial capital. This artistic research began after hearing stories about the extreme work routines and social lives of these fresh recruits in Singapore. The best stories were about Enzo Camacho’s sister, a beautiful, young third-year analyst at a prominent investment bank in this city.

In her videos, services, concoctions and drawings, Ana Prvacki uses a gently pedagogical and comedic approach in an attempt to reconcile etiquette and erotics. Prvacki’s practice also centres around the human negotiation involved in endeavours such as hospitality, team efforts through music or questioning our normative cultural codes around ways of being in and navigating a contemporary life.
