Sea level rise, flash floods, and extreme weather phenomena compel a profound reconsideration of the human relation to the environment. Continuing his filmic meditations on the complexities of contemporary society, Min-Wei Ting will use his residency to research and develop a speculative film project on latent and more prominent traces of climate change in present-day Singapore. The artist plans to conduct an observational investigation of the island nation to survey a range of existing objects, sites, and development projects and compose them into a visual index of natural and man-made features that may acquire different meanings and functions within advanced climate change scenarios.

Branching out from previous collaborative research on spiritual mapping, Zachary Chan will spend his residency developing maps and diagrams as a way of building an archive of the charismatic evangelical movement in Singapore.

Using ideas of spiritual mapping, where ‘territorial demons’ of a geographical location are identified, the artist intends to chart the history of the charismatic movement in Singapore beginning from the first recorded instance of glossolalia to current Christian eschatologies. In the process of charting such histories through maps and diagrams, conceptualisations of the ‘territorial spirits of the land’, the dichotomy between the demon/demonised, and the understanding of material spaces through such a lens will be dissected. Using self-portraiture alongside map-making, the research grounded in discourses of spiritual warfare will serve as a form of autoethnography. Through image-making, the artist hopes to formalise the research into frameworks that will structure his development within performative expressions, installations, the moving image, and sound.

During the residency, Lyno will explore the entangled histories of colonialism, modernisation, and urbanisation focusing on the Garden of Tropical Agronomy, located in the Bois de Vincennes, one of the largest public parks in Paris which hosted the International Colonial Exposition in 1931. The exposition featured several architectural representations of the colonies, including Cambodia and Indochina, the remnants of which are still extant today surrounded by modern facilities. The artist is interested in excavating the politics of the built environment to understand the historical role architecture has played in the construction of imperialist agendas and the lingering implications of colonial symbolism and power structures in the present.

22 February - 22 May 2022
Artist-in-Residence at HIAP – Helsinki International Artist Programme (Finland)

Born into a fisherman’s family that regularly hosted and attended seafood banquets, fish has always been a mainstay in Fan Chon’s diet. In recent years, fish has also become a recurring motif in his practice. Foreign invasive species, such as the Tilapia fish, mythical creatures, such as the half-dragon half-fish Shachihoko ubiquitous in Japanese culture, and the dolphins on George Town’s municipal coat of arms regularly appear in his work. Fan Chon understands food consumption as a constant negotiation between nature and culture inflected by social norms. During the residency, he intends to research the plating aesthetic and the obsession with freshness, exemplified by aquarium displays of live fish, typical of Chinese culture. Specifically, he will explore banquet dining practices of diasporic Chinese communities in Finland and Finland’s own fish culture, consumptions habits, and industry. At the same time, he will also explore the host country with an open mind looking for accidental discoveries of cultural artefacts and practices that might appear foreign and yet familiar.

Starting off from an existing body of work titled Landscapes and Paradise—a painting series inspired by tourist postcards and posters depicting Singapore in the 1980s and 1990s—Hilmi Johandi intends to frame his long-term enquiry into the relation between the constructedness of images, memory, and the creation of meaning from different angles.
Informed by art historical and philosophical discourses on the subject/object dichotomy and propelled by a growing interest in stage design, theatricality, and the phenomenology of perception, the artist intends to expand his own image-making process beyond painting, questioning his intuitive relation to the medium at the same time. This experimentation will potentially result into multimedia installations wherein formal and contextual aspects are merged and narratives unfold in space through a combination of visual layers and material components that elicit different modes of spectatorship in the viewer.

Combining fine arts training with her professional experience as a post-excavation technician, Fazleen Karlan intends to focus on further exploring the intersection of art and archaeology by experimenting with archaeological processes as a space for historical speculation, knowledge production, collaboration, and modes of reimagination.

Against Singapore’s persistent acceleration towards the future through redevelopment and modernisation, the artist is interested in the way certain memories are kept while others are discarded. From her point of view, “the past is more than objects waiting to be discovered; it is a series of perspectives waiting to be unearthed”. Deepening a long-standing involvement with the migrant experience, prominently manifested in the feature film A Land Imagined (2018), Yeo Siew Hua will use the residency to address the subject with the tools of cartography and music-making. Thinking in terms of borders and boundaries, either physical and symbolic, the artist intends to map out the lived experience of forced mobility and dispossession as well as its underlying power struggles and emotional trails. His research will revolve specifically on migrant songs, a cultural expression often characterized by melancholic melodies and sombre lyrics that speaks of longing, hard work, and perseverance. Conveying the experience of otherness and stirring emotions of communality, migrant songs haunts our times of unprecedented global mass migration and the contemporary debates surrounding exclusionary nationalist politics. Through participatory workshops aimed at lyric writing, music composition, and vocalisation, migrant songs will be created and disseminated in an effort to redraw boundaries of belonging.

A keen observer of nature and of the relationship between humans and the environment within Singapore’s fast-changing landscape, during the residency Chua Chye Teck will expand his lingering fascination for the overlooked by concentrating on weeds. Against the developmental emphasis on order, cleanliness, and control, weeds are often singled out as plants that grow in the wrong place where they can flourish in spite of being unwanted. In their resistance against human impulses to control and manicure nature, weeds are regarded by the artist as a manifestation of the beauty and resilience of wilderness and chaos. By observing both the physiology and formal qualities of weeds, Chua plans to experiment with a variety of light-sensitive and other photographic techniques to capture their intricate beauty and frame their value for nature and society.
