Investigating Singapore’s role within the growing global phenomenon of “green cities”, Coburn will pursue research into Singapore’s development from “Garden City” to “City in a Garden”. He aims to delve into historical and emerging notions of green urbanism, framing the garden as a pedagogical, philosophical, and literary construct. Focusing on two specific case studies, he will place the multiple functions of Singapore Botanic Gardens in a wider historical prospective and explore the social and economic conditions which underlie the complex eco-tourist structure of Gardens by the Bay.

During the residency, Lacey will develop One divides into two, a project which derives its title from a Maoist slogan from the 1960s. The project expands the artist’s investigations into non-western print histories and is backgrounded by her ongoing interest in the differing physical forms of public communication across various broadcasting platforms. Lacey aims to research current approaches to publishing and copyright in the Southeast Asian region with a specific focus on the printing history of Cambodia, looking in particular at bootlegged publications, the flouting of copyright laws, and the histories of digital piracy.

Currently based in Berlin Song-Ming Ang has spent almost ten years away from Singapore. The residency will allow him to research and reflect on the changes in Singapore society, in its ideals and ideology, through music. Ang will use resources available at the National Library and at the National Archives of Singapore to excavate posters, recordings of interviews and official speeches, and other audio-visual materials related to key and fringe figures of Singapore’s music scene, such as Zubir Saiz, composer of the national anthem. Chris Ho, a former radio DJ/journalist known for his anti-establishment stance; and the Chinese xinyao college folk movement that sprung in the 1980s. He also plans to address the performative aspects of patriotism and leadership by revisiting the state-commissioned National Day songs as well as the television broadcast of National Day Rallies.

Belgrade-based collective Škart is set to research the relationship between Singapore and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), excavating the historical, political, and cultural circumstances that framed Singapore’s adhesion to the movement in 1970. In recent years, the artists have been reflecting on the emancipatory potential and radical ideas purported by a movement which actively promoted the process of decolonization by subscribing to principles of cultural equality and mutual respect. Having focused so far mostly on European and South American countries, the residency provides the artists with the opportunity to expand their lines of inquiry into the context of Southeast Asia.

Rosemary Forde’s research looks at “curating as pedagogy” and explores the role of galleries within universities and art schools. For her doctoral dissertation in Curatorial Practice at Monash University, she developed Art holds a high place in my life
Damp: study of an artist at 21, an unconventional survey on the Australian artist group Damp which unfolded through a series of presentations within the context of the university art school in 2016. During her residency, Rosemary aims to expand her research focus investigating several university art galleries in Singapore.

He will examine urban landscapes, cultures, ethnicities, and artistic practices within these chosen countries in order to build an online resource platform with a socio-spatial analysis of the intersections between landscape, culture, and political practice. Throughout his curatorial research process, Anduar will connect with visual artists, researchers, and curators in order to gain a better understanding of local contemporary art practices and their importance within the cultural ecosystem of the region.

Since 2013, Zhao has been collecting old photographs of Singapore, focusing specifically on images that capture the city’s landscape and elements related to her natural history. The project for his residency, provisionally titled The Museum of Disappearance, sets out to unravel the dormant narratives embedded in the photographs in order to shed a different light onto the complex history of our relationship with nature. Further expanding on his interest in the interaction between humans and the natural environment, he plans to conduct extensive fieldwork in the backwoods behind his studio, a patch of secondary forest stretching from Malan Road to Henderson Road, documenting its trees and natural habitat.

These investigations are part of Afiaty’s wider research on art infrastructures in Indonesia, and the conceptualisation of a new space and site of encounters whose commitments are in line with the political, societal as well as cultural shifts taking place both locally and globally.
