Performativity and Urban Action – Talk by Apolonija Šušteršič
Description
9 Sep 2015, Wed 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Apolonija Šušteršič‘s research project, Performativity and Urban Action is focused on the current urban struggles over the provision of green spaces in large cities. We notice a high pressure on open urban spaces, many of which are in danger subjected to urban development for an economically viable middle class. This is true, i.e. for Stockholm (Rosenlundsparken, Årstafältet), Berlin (Tempelhofer Feld), Istanbul (Gezi Park), as well as Singapore (Bukit Brown Cemetery).
Šušteršič is concerned with exploring current activist practices, which employ the use of social media (websites), commemorative acts for the provision of historical knowledge and experience (guided walks, the collection of oral histories, bird watch, open classrooms), and the development of practical methods, such as action research and performative action. How can these engagements gain momentum for urban planning and design?
Apolonija Šušteršič is an architect and visual artist. Her work is related to a critical analysis of space, usually focused at the processes and relationships between institutions, cultural politics, urban planning and architecture. Currently Professor of Art & Public Space, Oslo National Academy of the Arts, Norway, Šušteršič holds a PhD from the University of Lund, Malmö Art Academy, Sweden. She has her own art/architecture studio practice in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and in Ljubljana (Slovenia).
