Title

Temperature Taking Exercises (2023–24)

Description

Set in the year 2050, the same year as the global target for net-zero emissions established during the Paris Agreement that emerged out of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in 2015, this almanac appropriates a traditional form using a variety of contributions that ‘forecasts’ the metaphysical and metaphorical climate in Singapore, an island-city once theorised by media scholar Cherian George as the “air-conditioned nation.” Cycling through seven seasons, the almanac moves against a linear passage of time, from archival vignettes of Singapore’s environmental history in the late 20th century to short stories and microfictions of an expanding tropical climate from the 21st to 25th centuries. The almanac also includes counter-cartographic renderings of a climate just Singapore in 2050, alongside the clairvoyant and timeless wisdom of a vernacular weather deity, commonly known as the Thunder Marshall, channelled through spirit medium Briano Sim at Shui Gou Guan Temple.

Conceived and edited by Soh Kay Min and Ng Mei Jia, in
collaboration with Kent Chan, artist, SG Climate Rally (SGCR), Dr Fiona Williamson, Associate Professor, Singapore Management University, and Zuhaira Syaza for graphic design.
