<dcterms:description>
Coastal communities and island populations, such as those in Singapore and Bintan, are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, particularly sea level rise. Coral reefs play a critical role as natural breakwaters, aiding to defend against coastal erosion. However, their survival is threatened by the implications of Singapore’s urbanisation on Bintan —through economic and touristic development—, alongside overfishing, rising sea temperatures, and the potential runoff impacts of industrial developments such as petrochemical plants. The lecture opens with a presentation by Professor Ute Meta Bauer (School of Art, Design and Media, NTU) on sea-based livelihoods in the Riau Archipelago and features lectures by coral restoration diver Rudi (Bintan Black Coral Dive) and Associate Professor Peter Todd, (Experimental Marine Ecology Laboratory, NUS; Director, Tropical Marine Science Institute, NUS) , with a response by Dr Karenne Tun (Director, Coastal and Marine Branch, National Biodiversity Centre, NParks) and moderated by Associate Professor Laura Miotto (School of Art, Design and Media, NTU). The session explores current coral restoration projects initiated by Rudi in Bintan, including nature-based solutions, highlighting their significance for coastal communities reliant on reef coastlines for their livelihood. Returning to urban Singapore, Associate Professor Todd will discuss eco-engineered seawalls that function as surrogates for natural habitats, supporting coral growth while simultaneously serving as coastal defense structures against rising tides.

    <dcterms:description>
Rising temperatures induced by climate change as well as land-use development are two of the biggest threats to insect populations globally in what has been referred to as the “insect apocalypse.” Here in Singapore, a decline in insect populations could threaten the ecological diversity of our parks and reserves and diminish critical food sources for the migratory land birds that annually visit Singapore in places such as the Botanic Gardens and Pasir Ris Park. Insects also provide vital ecosystem services such as pollination provided by bees, pest regulation by wasps and nutrient cycling aided by dung beetles, which are indispensable to the ecological balance of our forests such as those in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. In this lecture, moderated by Laura Miotto (Associate Professor, School of Art, Design and Media, Nanyang Technological University), ecologist Eleanor Slade (Associate Professor, Forest Invertebrate Ecology, Asian School of Environment, Nanyang Technological University and Principal Investigator, Tropical Ecology & Entomology Lab) and artist Wendy Zhang (artist and insect conservation educator) will highlight the critical role insects play in the ecosystems that support our natural spaces in Singapore. Drawing on their expertise in ecology, entomology, insect conservation and art, they will discuss current strategies for biodiversity conservation and the actions needed to protect insect populations in the future.

    <dcterms:description>
This lecture explores localised and relational approaches to understanding ecological systems, from quantitative assessments and climate modelling to speculative cartographies and situated local knowledge systems. It brings together artist-researcher Zarina Muhammad, STAR Artist-in-Residence at NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore, and Assistant Professor Perrine Hamel, NTU Asian School of Environment, to discuss their distinct methodologies to environmental research. While Muhammad draws on performance and participatory practice to engage more-than-human worlds in the context of ecological crisis, Hamel will share her research in urban hydrological modelling and ecosystem service frameworks, demonstrating how nature-based infrastructures can contribute to resilient and inclusive cities in the region. Moderated by Associate Professor Laura Miotto, the discussion considers how diverse research methodologies can shape new ways of perceiving, representing, and responding to environmental change.

    <dcterms:description>
NTU CCA IdeasFest is a platform to catalyse critical exchange of ideas and encourage thinking “out of the box”. It links the artistic and academic communities with grassroots and self-organised initiatives and small-scale entrepreneurship. Following the global call for an ecological turn in art, architecture, and design, NTU CCA IdeasFest 2023 FOOD Eat. Secure. Sustain. presents projects that engage, investigate, and aim to ensure food security on a healthy planet. The vitality of food poses a wide-ranging set of questions and problems when confronted with nature’s diminishing capacity to nourish life as a result of harmful anthropocentric activity. Such challenges demand that we rethink our modes of production and consumption.

This third edition of IdeasFest draws relational links to improve the understanding of sustainable food systems and their urgencies, opening a pathway towards actionable steps to ensure food security. Current food practices are threatening both people and planet; more nourishing and sustainable ways of eating and producing need to be developed. This need to transform our societies towards socio-ecological sustainability is clear, but many proposals lack the concrete economic and political scaffolding necessary to make their implementation feasible.

The global food system encompasses all economic sectors, and understanding its components is essential for developing and executing effective measures to strengthen its sustainability. IdeasFest 2023 FOOD Eat. Secure. Sustain. looks into how various technologies affect (traditional) food practices and culinary techniques, and which of these are valued. Food security hinges on sustainable food systems which are based on subsystems, including farming, waste management, and supply infrastructures, which in turn interact with trade, energy, and health systems.

Focusing on social interactions that connect academic research with artistic and cultural fields as well as with architecture and design applications, this edition draws a direct relation between human societies and their impact on the environment. It presents environmentally friendly ways of living, exploring regional crafts, reusing, repairing und upcycling. While scientific evidence on climate change and food scarcity is widely discussed, to materialise future-proof food communities, it requires socially robust and impactful proposals that create a relay between local perspectives and knowledge generated in academia. To address food related issues and the climate crisis in a continued dialogue is necessary, as there is a risk that the gravity and urgency of this crisis will not be fully comprehended.

As a platform to feature new initiatives, NTU CCA Ideas Fest FOOD Eat. Secure. Sustain. is an invitation to share and engage in cooperative projects and collective experiences through workshops, site visits, screenings, performances, public installations, participatory projects, and a summit. This diverse programme will be enriched by presentations of start-up initiatives and public dialogues on how to support Singapore’s aspiration to meet 30% of its nutritional requirements domestically by 2030 collectively and individually. A two-day Ideas Conference will bring together a prominent group of architects, theorists, researchers, curators, designers, and community groups to discuss further ideas on sustainability, circular economy, food security, creative learning, and the potential of cultural heritage such as crafts and sustainable urbanism to envision a responsible future city.

Ideas Fest 2023 FOOD Eat. Secure. Sustain., conceived in partnership with Singapore-ETH Centre Future Cities Laboratory Global, contemplates on sustainable food systems, climate awareness and solutions for a more sustainable future. <dcterms:description>
Bahbak Hashemi-Nezhad’s practice spans from neighbourhood plans and public spaces to recipes, games and objects. His approach to design draws on play theories and strategies of defamiliarisation as contextual research tools that actively engage different publics in design processes.

His presentation will focus on Hello Stranger (2016), a critical game designed with and for staff members at the Victoria & Albert’s Museum of Childhood, London, United Kingdom. Estrangement devices were created to induce “question-making” as a tool to recalibrate the overfamiliar and sense the museum anew in order to critically reflect upon the experiences it offers and the qualities it values.

In this lecture, Wilfried Kuehn will address the concept of “Curatorial Design”, an expression coined by the Kuehn himself. He will explore the role of space and architecture in artistic and curatorial practices through several case studies of exhibition displays and institutional projects he developed, including the exhibition design for Documenta11.

Laura Miotto will address site-specific spatial narratives focusing on her work for the Malay Heritage Centre in Singapore. Located in the historical precinct of Kampong Glam and re-opened to the public in 2012, the Centre undergone three years of interpretative planning that repositioned the institution in the cultural ecosystem of Singapore. Miotto will unpack site-specific strategies to regenerate connections with the many identities associated to this significant place, looking at the intersection between architecture, site, and narratives.

This workshop is part of the public programme of The Making of an Institution.
</dcterms:description>
